A Pygmy Hippo Species Thought Extinct Has Been Spotted Alive
The pygmy hippopotamus, as its name suggests, is a smaller version of the common hippopotamus. In fact, by weight, it’s about 10 times smaller. But that’s not the only difference. While the common hippopotamus can be found living in central and southern Africa, the pygmy hippo is only found in West Africa. Common hippos tend to be social and live in herds numbering in the dozens, up to around 200 individuals. Pygmy hippos, meanwhile, tend to be solitary creatures, living alone or in pairs, as couples or as a mother and child. Finally, while common hippos are a species currently listed as vulnerable, pygmy hippos are endangered.
