Blackwork has been around for centuries. It was seen on the cuffs, collars and sleeves in historical portraits, and worked in Holbein or double running stitch to make the stitching reversible. Today, blackwork is usually stitched on evenweave, often using coloured thread. Here we show you how to adapt a pattern by adding blackwork. Our inspiration was taken from Susan Bate’s spring sampler in this issue. By extracting small parts of her design, we have created a card, a useful bookmark and pretty scissor keeper.
