I have become one of those weirdo cyclists you try to avoid. I don’t know when or how this came about, but it is now beyond doubt, sadly. If I met me, I would try to avoid eye contact with me. WHAT ARE THEY? The quadriceps, or quads, are the muscle group at the front of the thigh which contribute (in combination with the glute muscles) around 50 per cent of the total pedal power when cycling. HOW DO THEY WORK? The quads play a key role, along with the glutes, in powering the pedal stoke, particularly as the pedal reaches the top of the stroke in initiating the push downward (power phase) – beyond the three o’clock position (after quarter of the pedal stoke) the glutes and hamstrings should be predominately powering the pedal, and if the quads are involved at this stage it can lead to an overload of the muscle or quad dominance.
