This island, which sits just off the south coast of the UK, has a reputation as a sort of 1960s-England-in-miniature, which, I would say, is reasonable. It’s certainly no vehicle-free idyll, but there are no motorways or sprawling developments (or branches of Greggs!), and there are plenty of quiet back lanes and bridleways through gentle green English countryside. The southeast corner (Sandown, Shanklin, Ventnor) is the seaside strip, with traditional beach huts, bathing sands and bucket ’n’ spade shops, while Cowes, Ryde and ‘capital’ Newport are the ‘big cities’.
