Yes, I tapered, but only in the final few weeks. Many people training for endurance just go out and ride big miles, which is definitely a mistake. When you start to tire and your technique deteriorates you need really good all-round conditioning, especially around the knees, ankles and lower back. Unlike most roadies, I build a long fell run into each week’s training. For the 12-month lead-up, I followed a pattern of three-weeks build, one-week recovery, allowing proper adaptation and recovery. In the final four months, I did less high intensity and instead focused on adapting to long hours.
