At a conservative estimate, a bike rider has three different saddle adjustments available, two on the bars and stem, various angles you can position the brake levers, and two dimensions of adjustment on the pedal cleats.
It is, therefore, only a matter of time before most cyclists start to wonder if adjusting some of these variables might make them more comfortable, or more aerodynamic, or more powerful, or maybe all three at once. Since trying every possible variation will take several thousand years, it is as well to start fiddling right away.
