There are sportive rides, and then there is THE sportive ride — La Marmotte Granfondo des Alpes. At 174.4km, with over 5,000m of climbing, and taking in some of the most iconic climbs in the Alps — Col du Glandon, Col du Télégraphe, Col du Galibier, and finally the legendary Alpe d’Huez — it’s the daddy of the lot.
The event claims to be the original sportive, with a history going back to 1982. But there’s rarely anything really new in cycling, and the Marmotte has its roots firmly in the Brevet de Randonneur des Alpes (BRA), one of the original long-distance cyclotouriste events which gave birth to the Audax movement, and was first run in 1936.
