In 1908 London became only the fourth nation to host the Olympic Games, and while cycling fans weren’t short on entertainment with seven events on offer, they were quite different to those on today’s Olympic programme. They were all on the track, for a start – the 660 yard concrete surfaced White City Stadium in West London, constructed for the Games. They included a one-lap sprint, then five, 20 and 100km races, a 2km tandem race and a 1,980 yard team pursuit. Britain won gold in every event except the tandem, in which they took silver and bronze instead.
