There is pressure building on the UCI to extend the U23 age category by a year, accommodating final year riders who will miss out on a season.
The idea would be that next year, riders born in 1998 ride in the Nations Cup, the most prestigious races for younger riders, including the U23 Tour of Flanders and Tour l’Avenir.
In a short statement to Cycling Weekly, however, the UCI said: “We can confirm that the UCI is not considering adapting age categories for the 2021 season.”
Nevertheless, they are facing requests to reconsider. Thomas Pupp, team manager of Tirol KTM, revealed he sent a letter to the governing body last week on behalf of his team, SEG Racing, the German federation and other development teams.
