We’re all looking for new reasons to ride. With racing, mass participation events, holidays and charity rides all on hold we’re having to rethink our riding. During lockdown turbo training took on a new meaning for me. Sessions on Zwift burnt off energy and worked wonders for my fitness, while gravel rides in the spring sunshine put a smile back on my face. But now what? Our riding is once again unlimited, and while I’m enjoying that I still need some sort of goal. Recently I spotted a friend taking some Strava KOMs near me on the North Downs. Tom Dumoulin wants to ride Paris-Roubaix ‘like Wiggins’ Dutchman Tom Dumoulin has never ridden the Hell of the North, but has revealed that he would like to before he retires. In an interview with cycling website Wielerflits, Dumoulin said: “Paris-Roubaix is on my bucket list. It was another world when I first tried my hand at tile hunting. My colleague James had been writing a piece speaking to those who took the practice of trying to get as many mile square sections of the world map on VeloViewer to the extreme and I had agreed to give it a go myself. It was, as I wrote in the 2 April issue, a revelation. Turns out there’s a whole network of roads that I’ve never ridden and some of them are great. Nestled alongside the Mediterranean on the Côte d’Azur, between Saint-Raphaël and Sainte-Maxime, lies the resort of Les Issambres. It was here that by 1955 the professional rider Apo Lazaridès had established a bar among the villas. In order to keep business brisk in winter, Lazaridès hit on the idea of organising out-of-season rentals for fellow pros to use as bases for pre-season training camps. So it was that in early 1955 the Brits from Hercules arrived in Les Issambres, taking up residence in a pink villa, set on readying themselves for racing in France. I have struggled with disordered eating for the past few years, but am now getting back on track. I’m concerned that prolonged under-fuelling may have harmed my bone health. What should I do? It’s great you’re getting to grips with more consistent fuelling. If you are a female cyclist, an indicator that you are getting sufficient energy is having regular menstrual cycles. The hormones produced during the menstrual cycle are key for bone health. For male and female cyclists, as well as fuelling, it’s important to do load-bearing exercises off the bike – for performance and bone health (see CW feature ‘Who Bears Wins’ from 4 July 2019). Last week, out for a ride, I realised there was a north-easterly breeze, which is a little unusual around here. It seemed a nice opportunity to have a go at a longish Strava KoM. I knew more or less where it began and finished, so wound myself up into a proper effort for four miles of downwind glory. Editions of the magazine from the early 90s were packed with familiar names. Looking at the cover shot of a 24-year-old Chris Boardman in yellow at the Tour of Lancs, it’s hard to believe that little more than a year later he’d be wearing the yellow jersey of the Tour de France, having won the prologue in Lille. At this point Boardman was already Olympic champion, having shot to fame on the – oft-called ‘space age’ – Lotus bike in Barcelona the previous summer. ELAINE SCOTT Elaine Scott became the third person to hit the 5,000-mile target during a ride on 10 May. I read with interest the comments from fellow cyclists in the recent article regarding Strava charging for the use of certain features. I’ve always subscribed to Strava in the five years that I’ve been a member. Paying a pound a week to subscribe to something that they have had the privilege of using for free up to now is not a huge cost. Cycling can be as cheap or expensive a pastime as you want it to be. Maybe people should appreciate what they have had free use of, and if they want extra features, pay for them as subscribers like I have been doing for some years. We’ve all been there. You’re halfway through a gruelling 176km training ride in hilly terrain, and, as you come up the hill, there are cars lining both sides of the road. As you get closer, you see the people standing at the road side. They see you and start clapping, banging pans, waving flags. As if the lines between gravel and mountain biking weren’t blurred enough, Cannondale has announced a new ‘full suspension’ Topstone Carbon Lefty and Topstone Carbon Neo Lefty e-bike. Promising the best of all worlds, the new bikes look to push gravel into murkier waters still. Buckle up for what could become a bumpy ride! Michell Arthurs-Brennan: tech editor I tested this bike from February through to late March, totting up – in the end – well in excess of 1,000 kilometres. From the first ride it blew me away, resulting in a personal best on my home climb on day one. Your debut WorldTour season has been kiboshed by Covid-19, but you did get in quite a bit of racing in January and February – how did it go? The start in Australia [Tour Down Under] was eye-opening – the level of racing and the pressure. I honestly never thought I’d look at the world in all its variety and think, “What this place needs is more bike mechanics.” But anyone who has tried booking a bike in for work at a bike shop lately will tell you that, at the moment, you can have a new kidney installed faster than you can have a fresh chain put on. “Hire more mechanics!” you might think. You would be overestimating the speed with which the Swiss finishing schools can polish them up and shovel them out. The night before the final stage of the 1955 Tour de France, Britain’s Brian Robinson and Tony Hoar couldn’t sleep. Behind them were 4,247km of tough racing, crashes and punctures; three weeks of cobblestones, mountains and desperate chases. How Danish all-rounder Jakob Fuglsang (Astana) maintained his motivation during his country’s lockdown: By virtual racing: “I took part in the Giro Virtual. It was fun, but also quite intense. It was good training for me, as you can never relax on a trainer. With travel still very restricted, many riders will be missing a spring or early summer cycling trip. Luckily, it is easy to replicate most of the elements of the classic cycling holiday at home. Start by dismantling your bike and packing it into a bag or box. As soon as you’ve done this, find the single most important tool needed to put it back together, and go and hurl it away as far as you can over the garden fence, or lob it into a passing skip lorry.
