CORINNE BLACK Corinne Black hit 5,000 miles back on 13 May, a period when she was riding exclusively on the turbo during the early phase of the coronvirus pandemic. “I’m asthmatic and on two inhalers so I shielded for 12 weeks. I started to think, what can I do to give back to those still out there working?” she says. “So I decided on cycling the Tour de France distance over 21 consecutive days on Zwift for the NHS. I ended up cycling 2,218 miles in 125 hours and 20 minutes.” With a brother and sister both working for the NHS, raising money for them was a no-brainer. In your last issue (CW June 25, French Greats), I couldn’t help noticing a striking photograph of a young Jacques Anquetil, presumably from the 1950s (p25). The bicycle he has appears to have an unthreaded headset. I was under the impression this was a much more recent design, with Wikipedia informing me that the patent for this is owned by Dia Compe (2010). I thought Pace mountain bikes had used them first in the 1990s, but this is clearly far earlier. Though I don’t profess to have an unhealthy interest in headset spotting, this is surely quite a revolutionary bike in young Master Jacques’s hands? I’d be interested to know a bit more. Cycling brands have recognised the importance of BAME visibility to increase participation. Ger Tierney, associate creative director at Rapha, says: “We have sought to make our campaigns far more diverse in recent years, but we can still go a lot further. We had a positive response to the Women’s New Chamois campaign last year, which featured intimate, honest portraits of a diverse cast of women, shot by Ana Cuba. The Topeak Prepstand Race is a folding workstand which is ideal for those with limited space, or riders who want to pack a workstand up to take on their travels. We plan to test this one on campervan adventures, as well as over the course of stage races, once lockdown is lifted. The workstand clamps the bike via the front forks (or rear dropout if you’re working on the front brake, for example) and bottom bracket shell. I often get really numb fingers when I’m out on long rides and I worry about it affecting my bike control. Why is this happening and how can I prevent it? This is a really common problem and there are two things to consider. First is bike set-up. Is your reach too long, or your bars set too low? This may be causing increased compression on the wrist area, affecting the neurological pathways running through the hands – which may manifest as numbness in the fingers. You should also be varying your hand positions during your ride in order to offload pressure on the back, wrists, shoulders, and elbows. Trinidad has produced some strong track cyclists such as Nicholas Paul, though not necessarily road racers. Teniel Campbell, with help from the UCI training programme, as well as influence from her family, helped her develop in that direction. Her father races in the USA, while she and her brother started going to the cycle track at their local sports complex when they got bored of watching their mother play netball. She won local and national races, and was spotted by UCI president David Lappartient while racing in Martinique. For now: Don’t go overboard with your training, otherwise you will burn out. Limit Zwift races to twice a week, at most. Over the next few weeks: Set new, tangible goals. Make these interesting and relevant to you to stay motivated. Use spare time to work on other weaknesses normally neglected. Keep yourself mentally healthy and stay relaxed through other activities. Once a race schedule is announced: Remain in ‘maintain’ mode until six weeks out from competition, then begin to sharpen – remember, it is OK to lose some sharpness in the short term. When racing resumes: Accept more pre-race nerves than usual in the lead-up to your first event back. Don’t be put off – nerves are to be expected after such a break.…

If you think you have Covid-19, the government advice is to stay at home and book a drive/walk-through antigen test or order a home test kit via the nhs.uk website. The test must be taken within five days of first showing symptoms. If you’re worried about your symptoms, you should use the NHS 111 online coronavirus service. Those who want to know whether they have had the virus may be keen to take an antibody test. However, this test is currently reserved for NHS and care staff. In relation to purchasing an antibody test privately, the government website cautions: “There is no strong evidence yet to suggest that those who have been proven to have had the virus and to have produced antibodies are immune.”…

Pogačar beats Roglič to Slovenian time trial title Racing at the only National Championships happening at its allotted time, Tadej Pogačar beat Primož Roglič to defend his Slovenian TT title. The UAE Team Emirates rider rode the 15.7km course in a time of 31.10, nine seconds faster than Roglič, with Jan Polanc (UAE Team Emirates) third. I took this picture on stage three of the PruTour, from Winchester to Bristol. I was on a motorbike for the whole of this week-long race and as this was the first time I had ever been to Cheddar Gorge I got there a bit earlier to scout out a location. The three-mile-long gorge is a spectacular setting and anyone who has ridden up this iconic climb will recognise this section as the steepest part. It’s a unique place and England’s largest gorge, but I doubt the riders took a second look as they raced through in just a few minutes. There was much jubilation on the podium at Le Havre and on the streets of Asmara, Eritrea, after stage six of the 2015 Tour de France. Why? Because history was made when Daniel Teklehaimanot, then riding for MTN Qhubeka became the first black African to wear a leader’s jersey – the King of the Mountains polka-dot jersey. Although he lost it to Chris Froome after four days, this was a milestone and a hopeful sign in the move towards a more racially diverse professional peloton. Testing the Foil during lockdown meant I couldn’t get out for any epic 100-mile plus adventures, so I spent a lot of time on the indoor trainer. As the lockdown was eased, I managed to get out on the roads for some of the longer rides, taking the bike on some speedy jaunts around the local lanes to test its aero capabilities. It was early March and the coronavirus – not yet declared a pandemic – seemed a relatively distant threat. For most of us, daily life was still largely unaffected. This week we’re looking at the leaderboards for a couple of the older age categories. Ewan Berkeley is currently leading the 60-69 age group with his 1,321-watt effort, giving him a watts per kilo reading of 16.72. “Sprinting is definitely not my forte, but it’s an important part of the Training Peaks sessions,” Berkeley said. “You have to do three five to 10-second sprints as a warm-up before a session.” Noticing the benefit of these efforts, and then seeing the Max Watts Challenge, Berkeley wanted to see how big a number he could hit on his Wattbike. “I got a bit hooked on how high I could go. Word reaches us of a conversation between a professional rider and his coach. The rider had latterly been for a ride with a fellow pro, a rider of some considerable ability. “It was a really hard workout,” said the rider. “That guy is a real animal – he can do some amazing numbers. “He’s only 75 kilos, but his 20-minute best power is over 460 watts.” “That’s amazing,” said the coach. “I wish you could do that. The cycling world was still reeling from Eddy Merckx’s incredible 17-minute victory in the Tour de France weeks earlier. It was the 24-year-old’s first Tour win in which he also won the mountains, points, combination and combativity classifications. His Faema outfit also won the team classification.
