We’re enthusiastic advocates of a bit of cross training here at CW. Spicing up your life with a different sport or pastime every now and then is good for the muscles that don’t get used when pedalling and can be great for the mind too, giving you a mental break from cycling and therefore putting you in a better place when you get back in the saddle. Hobbs wins Junior Tour of Wales Noah Hobbs took the final win at the SD Sealants Junior Tour of Wales over the weekend despite a concerted effort by Ineos-bound Josh Tarling on the final stage that finished atop the Tumble, in South Wales. Hobbs took the lead after winning stage two and held onto the leader’s jersey through the Bank Holiday weekend to add his name to a list of former winners, many of whom now race at WorldTour level. After winning silver on the track last month at the Commonwealth Games John Archibald returned to the domestic time trial scene in dominant style at the National 10-Mile Championship. Archibald last won the National 10 in 2018. Although technically still part of Israel’s academy team, Mason Hollyman has already signed for the WorldTour team and will race with them this week. A talented climber, he has had results in both stage and one-day races this season but will no doubt be riding in the services of Dylan Teuns and Michael Woods this week. Meanwhile, Sam Culverwell (Trinity) is a 21-year-old with a bright future ahead of him, evidenced by his ninth-place finish in the Commonwealth Games road race. He has gained plenty more experience at UCI races in 2022 as well, upping his number of appearances from 18 in 2021 to 30 and counting this year. Inspired by its popular Samba shoe, Adidas has cut a section out of the sole, fitted two-bolt cleat plates, and thereby fashioned a trainer ready for ‘life both on and off the bike’. Consulting with cycling communities in London, Los Angeles and Germany, Adidas found that “the culture of cycling is changing and [there is] a greater demand for versatile products” – products which perform well when riding but don’t look out of place once you’ve locked up your bike and popped into the cinema, cafe, or wherever else in town. A few weeks ago I had what I thought was a great idea for a column. I would simply write about what I think about when I’m out riding on my own. It would be a meander through all the happy notions that are prompted by being in the fresh air in an English summer, doing what all right minded people love doing. A promising start by Team GB faded to nothing at last week’s Tour de L’Avenir, with none finishing the 10-day race. The overall winner was 19-year-old Belgian rider Cian Uijtdebroeks. The GB team included Sam Watson, Leo Hayter and Thomas Gloag, all of whom have been signed up to WorldTour teams for 2023. Their campaign began well with third place out of 27 teams in the opening TTT prologue, and Gloag went on to claim the leader’s yellow jersey after winning the fourth stage. Much as I enjoy CW, I find it hard to escape the feeling that the majority of its content is aimed at cyclists with a much bigger budget than my own. Recent examples include the review of the new Cervélo S5 with a price-tag of £9,000-plus, Zipp’s 858 NSW Tubeless Disc wheelset at £3,750, and the recommended £141 Café du Cycliste Centifolia Floriane women’s jersey. I’m sure these are fine and sensible purchases, if you have the money. But for those of us who don’t, it would be useful to see some space given to advice on more affordable alternatives. Founded in 2021 by Britishborn New Zealand rider James Mirti, Global6 is a team that rides at Continental level, and has spent the past two years racing in Europe. Comprised of riders from New Zealand, Australia, Ethiopia, Brazil and Finland, among other nationalities, Global6 Cycling are an eclectic team that debuted at the Tour of Britain last year. Despite finishing last on the stage three team time trial, Global6 stood out for riding with bright green front wheels in support of charity Refugee Action, leading to organisers inviting them back once again. They aim to “provide talented riders from diverse origins and backgrounds an equal chance to ride in the professional cycling peloton”, with Spaniard Miguel Ángel Fernández and New Zealander Dylan Sunderland among their main riders. When he wasn’t riding “undercover” to catch out cyclistendangering motorists, ‘Operation Close Pass’ founder PC Mark Hodson was training with his local club Tamworth R MCC. But last autumn he was diagnosed with an inflammatory arthritic condition and suddenly his attitude towards cycling had to change. “Riding for me used to be all about the suffering and beating my average speed,” he says. “I was very competitive and I’d even try to PB the commute to work. Perhaps it was still finding its voice because the cover feature, somewhat bizarrely, is the jaunty recollection of a cycle ride in South Africa. The author – a Briton who was presumably working there in some capacity – recalls visiting a gold mine with his riding buddies and them later being chased down by a mine worker and accused of theft.
