In early 2018 when we were planning the inaugural Cycling Weekly awards night, talk soon turned to the Lifetime Achievement award. The question was, out of all riders past and present, who would we give it to? The list of potential recipients was huge.
“Brian Robinson,” I said, without a second thought. In that meeting were colleagues that didn’t normally work on cycling projects. “Are you sure?” someone asked. “What about Eddy Merckx or Greg LeMond?”
“No, it has to be Brian,” I said.
On the night, when Brian walked up to a raucous standing ovation, the hairs standing up on the back of my neck confirmed my gut decision. The word legend is used too often these days. But make no mistake, Brian was exactly that.
