British Cycling has appointed Jon Dutton as its new CEO after a “robust and competitive” recruitment process, according to the sport’s national governing body. Dutton, the former head of the Rugby League World Cup, is set to replace acting CEO Danielle Every, who replaced former head Brian Facer last October. BC has confirmed that Dutton is set to formally begin the role later this month. Prior to starting with BC, Dutton spent time working for the PGA European Tour; UEFA, where he worked on logistics and transport for the Champions League final in 2003; and the 2014 Tour de France Grand Départ, where he was director of readiness helping to organise the first two stages of the race in Yorkshire. “You’ve got a road bike, so time trial” – that is the message from Cycling Time Trials as it launches sweeping new changes designed to encourage more riders to take up the sport. From now on, all open events will feature separately classified road bike results, which can also be viewed on the CTT website, and can be filtered into men’s and women’s results, and age group categories. Significantly, popular time trials results platform Spindata is also on board with the changes, as is real-time time trialling results app ResultsSheet. It means road bike riders in search of a more level playing field and recognition of their efforts no longer need to search out ‘road bike only’ time trials. Tadej Pogačar put in another performance to remind everyone just who the strongest rider in the world right now is at Amstel Gold as he soloed to victory with 29km to go. Meanwhile, in the women’s race it was another case of a predictable winner as Demi Vollering and SD Worx used their collective strength to bludgeon their opponents into submission. In the men’s race, the winning move went clear with 90km still to go, Pogačar attacked with 76km to go, sending a group of 10 riders clear, then again at 36km that sent him, Ben Healy (EF Education-EasyPost) and Tom Pidcock (Ineos Grenadiers) off the front. This weekend sees the return of The Cycle Show, which will be celebrating its 20th anniversary at Alexandra Palace in London. Starting tomorrow (Friday 21 to Sun 23 April) it will be held over three days and promises something for everyone. First day in the job can someone please explain to him and the press office/marketing that racing/taking part in the majority of events held under BC rules isn’t a “customer experience” as recently communicated in an official newsletter. Is the radical new Specialized Sirrus hybrid bike, which has a hole – officially a ‘compliance junction’ – where the lower part of the seat tube should be, about to usher in a new era of imaginative, creative bike design? Colin Thornton of Coldra Road Club wins on the seafront at Sandown in 1987 (the name of the race isn’t listed with the image). It was one of the last wins in a long and illustrious career for the Welshman, who had been racing since the late 1960s. He was crowned national amateur Welsh champion in 1973, aged 21, and enjoyed a great deal of success in and around his home country, both in road races and time trials – although it was the cut-and-thrust of kermesse racing he loved the most. Rob Scott, one of the star riders on the now-defunct AT85 Pro Cycling squad, has found himself a home for next season on foreign soil, after being unable to find a place on any British squads for the remainder of the current season. The Parcours Chrono wheelset is a deep section option, with the front and rear wheels designed specifically to take into account the different yaw angle (the angle at which the air impacts the wheel). As a result, the front has a wider and more U-shaped profile (as the yaw angles are higher) and the rear wheel keeps a more traditional narrower V-shape. According to Parcours the result is that the wheels are more aerodynamic than similarly deep wheels, while also being more stable in the wind. There are times when you will find yourself seeking revenge on other riders. Often these times will join up into an extended period of vengeance-seeking with no gaps at all, and when this happens we call it a racing career. I would advise you not to seek revenge by knocking them off. Despite expectations, it’s very hard to knock someone off a bike deliberately. You’ll find they are a great deal more stable than you might have hoped, and that you are correspondingly rather less stable. (And by the way, you can’t seek vengeance on someone if you fell off trying to bundle them off the road and they failed to be bundled.) The British team was full of confidence as they met the press ahead of travelling to Canada for the Montreal Olympics. Their confidence came after a whole week of track training together at the Meadowbank velodrome in Edinburgh. A week of training sounds rather pathetic compared to how the British team now trains together year round, but the confidence was well founded. On a windy evening, riding training wheels and tyres, the team pursuit quartet rode 4,000m in four minutes, 32 seconds, a time that Cycling said was the fastest ever ridden in the UK.
