There was something special about the final podium of this year’s UAE Tour. After four wind-stricken stages, Elisa Longo Borghini took her place on the top step by the seafront in Abu Dhabi, and turned to congratulate the riders either side of her. As she did so, the speakers played the winner’s national anthem, ‘Il Canto degli Italiani’, and the three women sang proudly in unison.
For the first time ever, the Italians had blocked out a women’s WorldTour podium outside of their home country. There stood Longo Borghini, flanked by her diminutive Trek-Segafredo teammate Gaia Realini and UAE Team ADQ’s Silvia Persico, in what many saw as a rare show of Italian dominance.
