Tributes have been paid to the racing cyclist, bike shop owner, and long-time club volunteer Alan Bates, who died last month aged 89.
The east Londoner came from a cycling family, with his father, Edwin Bates, a founder of Bates Brothers, later E.G. Bates Cycles, in Plaistow. Bates would go on to spend his whole working life at the shop, 50 years, building frames, and running the business until it closed its doors in 2002.
His passion for cycling was clear away from E.G. Bates too, seeing him compete in time trials, road races, and on the track at Herne Hill Velodrome.
Bates won the Eastern Counties BAR in 1956, 1957 and 1958, and in 1960 finished seventh in the BBAR, with a time of 1:56.20 in the 50 miles,…
