Even on the sunniest days, long and narrow Toronto lots have always kept homeowners in the dark – and the architectural fashions of decades past haven’t helped. “I always blame the ’80s for bad renovations,” says architect Betsy Williamson of Williamson Chong Architects. To remedy this in a seven-metrewide Summerhill Edwardian that was otherwise in great shape, Williamson went for a clean slate. “We squeegeed off the front,” she says, “and removed the existing rear addition.” With the porch gone, the outside is pulled closer to the large window, and light now penetrates the living room and foyer. II by IV Design is no stranger to big, modern projects (its portfolio of interiors includes Trump Tower’s America), and neither is the Chase Hospitality Group (its collection of upscale restaurants boasts the Chase and Colette). When they tackled the former Remy’s, a 25-year Yorkville fixture, however, the old building’s multiple alcoves and split-levels resisted efforts to bring them together. So why fight it? Each smaller space is now a vignette of its own, and the sum is a paean to Japanese aesthetics. An izakaya at the heart of the first floor literally shines. Growing up in Monterrey, Mexico, near the U.S. border, Ricky Sosa was more fascinated by rock ’n’ roll and American fashion than Mexican traditions. He listened to Black Sabbath and Guns N’ Roses, and designed T-shirts to sell at the local flea market. It wasn’t until he moved to Vancouver in 2003 that he recognized the vibrant culture he had left behind. On return visits to the Sierra Madre Mountains, he would join peyote ceremonies and learn the decorative beadwork of the Wixáritari people (also known as the Huichol). Sosa now uses this precise patterning technique to create grim but alluring decorative skulls, which he began exhibiting five years ago to immediate acclaim.
