LENS quality matters when it comes to bokeh. Better glass, larger maximum apertures and more diaphragm blades all add up, both in terms of the quality of out-of-focus areas and in terms of the price tag. That being said, lenses that are corrected to produce the sharpest images don’t necessarily produce the ‘creamiest’ bokeh. Special elements that are included in their design to minimise optical aberrations can result in gritty-looking bokeh. (See below.) Some lenses also produce bokeh discs that are either brighter at the edge and darker in the centre, or vice versa, although these can be viewed as giving a lens ‘character’ rather than being seen as a flaw. T AKE a peek around the back of the mid-range Metz, and it looks too simple to be taken seriously, with just a pair of control buttons. However, you can prod a sophisticated set of features into action, thanks to the flashgun’s mono touchscreen. The Gn 52 power rating is a cut above similarly priced Canon and Nikon flashguns, and the range of additional dedicated options stretches to Micro Four Thirds, Pentax and Sony. As with all other flashguns on test, the Metz features a bounce and swivel head with motorized zoom, 24-105mm in this case, complete with a wideangle diffuser and reflector card. It lacks the RF triggering of some flashguns here but, unlike the Canon 430EX III-RT, infrared wireless modes include both master and slave functions. (check the Metz…

N IKON’S newest flashgun replaces the SB-910 as the company’s flagship model. Compared with the SB-700, it adds a more powerful Gn 55 rating; a longer 24-200mm motorised zoom range, a programmable strobe/ repeat flash mode; on-board selection of TTL and TTL-BL modes; and the option of using an external power pack. A new integral cooling system enables quick-fire shooting for 100 or more shots, even at full output power. Nikon has taken a leaf out of Canon’s book and incorporated RF wireless communication as well as infrared, although it’s not so well implemented. Whereas the Canon 600EX II-RT features an RF transceiver, the SB-5000 only has a receiver and can’t work as a ‘master’. CAMBO is launching a new lens adapter that allows Canon EF lenses to be fitted to the Fujifilm GFX 50S mediumformat camera. Some vignetting is to be expected when using a full-frame DSLR lens on a medium-format body, although Canon’s tilt-shift lenses can provide a large enough image circle to fill the GFX’s sensor. The aperture is set on the adapter using its built-in dial and OLED screen, but there is no direct electronic connection between the camera and the lens. THE famous Royal Photographic Society has launched its 160th International Photography Exhibition (IPE). Claimed to be the world’s longest-running photography exhibition, the IPE takes the form of a competition that’s open to both amateur and professional photographers around the world. An all-female panel will select the best images for the exhibition for the 2017 competition, which will enjoy a nationwide 10-month tour, as well as awarding Gold, Silver and Bronze medals. T HERE’S lots of photographic fun to be had shooting abstracts – especially if you free yourself from the traditional ideas of what a photograph should be and begin experimenting with colour, texture shape and form. You’ll soon discover wonderful new ways to create lively and colourful images. Best of all you don’t need to get hung-up on shooting at the ‘magic hours’ around dawn and dusk. In fact the harsh midday light can often work in your favour. You don’t need to travel to exotic locations either. All these images were made within a few metres of each other in an area where disused containers were stored. The peeling paint and the rusting metal made the perfect subject. C AN’T get out of the house to go landscape shooting this weekend? You can cheat and build your own landscape – or a fakescape, as we like to call it! For this project, we created our mountains using some flour, some sugar and a touch of Photoshop. It’s great fun to do, and you can get really creative with the final result. When it comes to arranging your landscape, it’s best to pour your flour-based mountain formations onto a tray: it’s far easier to clean up! It also helps to shoot the forms at a slight angle, so you create a sense of scale and depth. You’ll need to mount your camera to a tripod and select a narrow aperture setting. THE patterns and textures lurking within machined parts take on a new life under magnification. Add a splash of colour from a well-placed paper background and a little extra light from a torch, and you have a classic still-life in the making. Once you’ve meticulously arranged your subjects and background, you need to decide which parts of the scene are held in sharp focus, and which fall away into a soft, diffused blur. This is determined by two factors – the point on which you focus, and the depth-of-field in the shot. By using Manual Focus mode, you can rotate the focusing ring to pick the sharp point in the scene (in this case, the tip of the screw), but by using Aperture Priority mode and dialling in different f-stops,…

E VEN if you’re a newcomer to photography, you’ve probably heard the word ‘bokeh’ being bandied around. Bokeh, which is pronounced ‘bouquet’ or ‘bow-kay’ by people in the know, is used to describe the blur in a picture. Not its quantity – that’s something determined by the choice of aperture, focusing distance, focal length and more – but rather its quality. It’s a hard one to quantify as it can’t be measured in the same way that, say, sharpness can. It’s also somewhat subjective: bokeh that one person judges to be beautiful might cause another to recoil in horror. T HE recent Mk III edition of Canon’s 430EX inherits a respectable maximum power rating of Gn (Guide number) 43, a motorised 24-105mm zoom head with 150 or 180 degrees of swivel to the left or right, respectively. On-board controls are now more intuitive. Build quality is very good, albeit without the pro-grade finish of the 600EX II-RT (right). High-speed sync and rear-curtain flash modes are supported, but there’s no stroboscopic repeat mode. Along with simplified controls and a cleaner layout, the Mk III also adds RF (Radio Frequency) triggering that was lacking in the Mk II flashgun. The Mk III lacks wireless master functions, so it can only be used in slave mode. Performance TTL flash metering accuracy is spot-on, recycling speeds are fast, and maximum output is pretty good.…

O FFERING a sizeable step up from the 52 AF-1 (left), this is Metz’s range-topping powerhouse of a flashgun, with pro-level aspirations. It has a beefier Gn 64 power rating, a bigger 24-200mm motorized zoom range, an extended tilt function that stoops to -9 degrees, and an additional strobe/repeat flash mode. It’s also the only flashgun here to feature a subflash module, ideal for adding a little fill-flash when using the head in bounce or swivel mode. Like the 52 AF-1, this upmarket Metz has a touchscreen that should prove more intuitive for the smartphone generation – but this time it’s colour rather than mono, and even clearer for menu navigation. T HE disarmingly simple on-board interface of the Nissin Di700A is based on a solitary Set button and a surrounding control wheel, which sit below a colour screen. MAKING your ideas and set-ups simple keeps macro shooting free of frustration. There’s seldom room for visual complexity when you work on a small scale, and revealing the intricate detail in nature’s humblest specimens makes for an excellent photo project. Although exotic plants are available all year round at your local florist or supermarket, a simple garden daisy offers all you need for a cracking shot. Place a flower on a blob of Blu-Tack or a similar adhesive on a worktop near a window. To create a focal point, carefully add a drop of water to the centre with a small paintbrush. This will add interest and work as a tiny lens on the stamen. To give a fine-art feel, a coloured sheet of paper keeps the background plain and…

GETTING precise and accurate focusing is much trickier with a macro lens, and using the view?nder can be a hit-or-miss process. Instead, frame up with your camera on a tripod and switch to Live View mode to see your composition on screen. Use the screen’s zoom controls to go in tight, then scroll with the D-pad to display a magnified view of the point you’ve focused on. (Most cameras give 10x magnification – plenty to allow highly accurate focusing.) By switching to manual focus and gently tweaking the focusing ring, you can then get your focus point exactly where you want it.
