A magnificent seven ideas for taking your photography in fresh new directions THE shapes and symmetry of these buildings is what fascinates me most. Taking an everyday structure that most people would ignore and finding a way to capture it in a new and unique way inspires me. This shot was taken at a residential public housing complex in Tseung Kwan O, on the outskirts of Hong Kong. Take an action shot CHALLENGE yourself to take an action shot the next time you see something exciting or fast-paced. This can be difficult when you need to anticipate what is about to happen, so it may be best suited to a sporting event, a concert or even a busy street, where you know there will be plenty of action to choose from. Use manual focus to pre-focus your camera on the spot that the subject is going to move through, then click at the right moment. I strongly believe that you can find amazing photo opportunities anywhere in the world. SHOOTING with a wideangle lens is the natural choice for a great many landscapes. But capturing a wide view without thinking about it has its dangers: it could mean that distant features are small in the frame, and that your shots lack impact. To avoid this, you need to pay more attention to how you compose your wide-angle shots. One approach is to get in close to foreground details such as rocks, foliage or a waterfall, to emphasise these features in the landscape. If there isn’t a strong enough foreground, make sure that the background elements fill the width of the frame. DULL days aren’t always great for photography, but here the lack of bright light has allowed me to find some detail in both the white lamp and the darker steam train behind. Overall the image looks flat and the colours – especially that lovely red – look washed out. To start this image rescue in Lightroom, I increased the contrast of the whole image by pushing the Contrast slider to +50. I then targeted the green and red, adding saturation to the red of the train but slightly desaturating the green in the background, using the individual Saturation sliders for green and red in the HSL panel. If you have puddles or streams in your foreground, reflecting your new sky in these areas will help lock your image together. To do this, click on your sky layer, then press Ctrl/Cmd+J to copy it. Drag this new layer to the top of the layers stack, then change the Blend mode to Overlay. Reduce the layer Opacity to about 50%, then press Ctrl/Cmd+T to enter Free Transform mode. Pull the top handle down past the bottom handle to turn it upsidedown, and position the reflected sky so it covers the water. USING fishtanks for photography may sound strange, and could raise eyebrows in the pet shop. But, teamed with a black background and a flashgun on either side, it’s a set-up that can yield some quirky shots. With this technique, you can experiment with different objects for different effects: Dry, rough objects tend to drag more bubbles down with them, while wet objects tend to produce a cleaner, smoother dive. By positioning two flashguns, one on either the side of the tank, the majority of the light will fall at 90 degrees to the camera lens and will therefore be unlikely to spill into the frame. UNDERSTANDING where the sun will be during the day is essential for making the most of any landscape. The most dramatic lighting effects generally take place around sunrise and sunset, so before I venture to any location, I check where these will be in relation to the features in the landscape. Even so, nature and the weather don’t always go to plan, so I will often change my composition and framing (or even the direction that I’m shooting) to react to where the light is falling on the landscape. ND GRAD FILTERS The best way to keep detail in both the sky and foreground of your landscapes in-camera is to use an ND grad filter. YOU might get lucky and stumble across amazing lighting or weather effects, but your chances of being in the right place to capture them is pretty slim. When it comes to capturing and experiencing the changes in the weather and light, there is no substitute for spending time in the landscape. My preferred approach when the weather is changing Quickly is to find a location and frame my shot, then wait for the right moment. USING spot metering and the exposure indicator in the viewfinder, you can set the exposure based on a specific part of the scene. But the histogram shows you the exposure for the whole image. By reviewing the histogram after you’ve taken a shot (or checking the live histogram, if available), you can see whether you’re making full use of the camera’s imaging sensor and if any areas are going to lose detail. Remember that the histogram is based on a JPEG version of the image and the camera settings made at the time; if you shoot raw, then you’ll have more headroom to fine-tune the exposure with compensation later, when you process the shot. With the help of a B&W 10-stop filter, I was able to achieve a slow shutter speed of 15 seconds. I warmed up the image slightly in Lightroom to exaggerate the warm glow in the setting sun. WHETHER you’re shooting sports, wildlife or something else altogether, sometimes a standard telephoto zoom lens just can’t get you close enough to the action. A supertelephoto zoom lens will extend your reach significantly – and there are plenty to choose from. A zoom range of around 100-400mm has long been a popular option to include in lens ranges (there are four included here), but some manufacturers have been pushing the envelope, super-sizing focal lengths to as much as 600mm. RED squirrels are among my all-time favourite British mammals. Largely displaced by the bigger and more aggressive grey squirrels, our stunning native reds have only a few strongholds left in the country. Early one morning, I visited an isolated population to capture some images of one of the UK’s best-loved mammals. While taking a range of portrait shots, I noticed how interested the squirrels were in my camera and equipment. 5 LANDSCAPE TYPES AND WHAT TO LOOK FOR ON LOCAT ION UNDERSTANDING how to capture each type of landscape is easier if you can spend as much time in the landscape as possible. Try to forget about everything apart from the landscape around you: this means leaving the mobile phone behind (or turning it off, at least), and forgetting about emails and even what you’re doing tomorrow. MANUAL exposure mode, which is indicated by the M on a camera’s mode dial, requires you to set the aperture, shutter speed and ISO in order to make an exposure. Actually, you can leave the camera to handle the ISO, a feature which we’ll come onto shortly, but you still have to be on your game when it comes to deciding on the best combination of aperture and shutter speed to get the effect you want. It’s not all about the brightness of a picture, you see, but the look that different apertures and shutter speeds can give the image. Manual mode isn’t as convenient as shooting in one of the camera’s advanced auto-exposure modes. Most of the time, the majority of us can probably get away with shooting in…

ALTHOUGH exposure is a flexible thing, there are optimum settings for specific subjects. For example, landscape images typically require small apertures to get everything sharp from foreground to horizon. As you can see above, this can require a fairly slow shutter speed when the sensitivity is set to ISO 100. If you’re shooting without the aid of a tripod or image stabilised lenses, the exposure might be too slow to hold the camera steady and get sharp pictures, in which case you can increase the ISO. At the other extreme, photographing active wildlife, particularly birds in flight, can require very fast shutter speeds. At ISO 100, this might result in having to use the maximum (widest) aperture on the lens. The maximum aperture on your lens might not be wide…
