An easy way to add magic to a coastal shot is to turn the ebb and flow of the waves into a swirl of motion. This will make the light, shade and definition of the water’s movement blend into a misty, indistinct form that immediately increases the artistic appeal. To do this, you need to use a slow shutter speed, and the slower you go, the more the water will blur out. To stop other elements in the scene from becoming equally blurred, you’ll need to mount the camera on a tripod to lock it in position. Once this is done, set your ISO to its minimum value (normally 100) and in Aperture Priority mode, dial in a small aperture (such as f/16 or f/22). This will give you the…

The popularity of drones has soared hugely in recent years and it’s not hard to see why when you see the unique perspective they can bring. By shooting directly down over a beach, it’s easy to capture patterns such as the sweeping curve of the coast, rolling waves or the intricate channels of a tidal river running into the sand. This bird’s-eye composition just isn’t possible any other way, but it’s important to remember that textures are always more obvious when you have low sun, so for the most interesting shots aim to shoot early or late in the day. The success or failure of a classic landscape is dependent on the light and conditions at the time of capture. If you compose a shot with the sky in the frame, but the sky is a bland white-out, then the only real fix is to return to the scene when the weather is more dramatic. If that’s not possible, you can always take the shot to make the best use of the foreground and add a more compelling sky in software later. If you have colour, contrast and a hint of form, you can take an impressionist-style image. Unlike the photo art created in editing software, this is something you can shoot in-camera by adding motion. Move the camera when the shutter’s open and you’ll get a blurry image. But take control of the movement and you create a colourful but indistinct impression of the scene. To get started, switch to Shutter Priority mode, set your ISO to 100 and dial in a shutter speed of around 1/15 sec. Now loosely frame up and move the camera in a smooth side-to-side motion, rotating at your waist, and pressing the shutter during the movement. After the shutter closes, check your results.
