It’s the beginning of March and I’ve arranged to meet landscape photographer David Clapp at his house, before heading up to Dartmoor together. We live in the same neck of the woods, so the logistics of the day are relatively easy to arrange, for once. After I arrive, we have a cup of tea, discuss the plan, then pile our gear and warm clothes into my car and head towards Haytor, a small village on the outskirts of the Dartmoor National Park. “I’ve forgotten my walking boots,” says David as we arrive at the first location, Emsworthy. Where should I shoot? All the gear in the world won’t help if you can’t find any wildlife. So let’s increase the odds of finding creatures worth capturing There is a wealth of information online, such as which species can be found at a particular nature reserve or what time of year nesting birds make their way through. Social media is another useful resource; search for species you want to photograph, and reach out to other photographers or wildlife experts to ask for their advice. Be careful what information you share online, though, especially about the sensitive locations of nesting birds or animals. It also pays to talk to people, such as park wardens, rangers, scientists and researchers. Especially when travelling abroad, the expertise of a local guide is valuable.…

Wildlife photography can be more than just attractive photos to fill books, calendars and social media feeds. Think wildlife photography and you’re probably thinking of monster telephoto lenses that allow you to keep a respectful distance and be non-intrusive – and maybe not get eaten in the process. This unique superzoom lens was originally designed for Canon and Nikon APS-C format DSLRs but is also compatible with EOS R and Z series mirrorless cameras via the respective mount adapters. Indeed, it’s Panasonic’s full-frame Lumix S line-up that appears to have slowed down, with nothing new since the Lumix S5. The new GH6 sits right at the top of the Lumix G lineup, offering powerful 4K and 5.7K video capabilities but in a smaller, lighter and cheaper setup than a full-frame system. It’s a serious step up from the Lumix GH5 II, which is essentially an update to the Panasonic’s long-running and popular GH5 model, but brings higher resolution, unlimited recording times, a huge leap in frame rates and a wider choice of recording formats, bit depths, bitrates and codecs. Build and handling It comes as no surprise that this pro-level Nikkor lens appears to be well-constructed and feels every bit like a high-grade model. It is aligned in build quality with the latest pro Nikon Z-Series cameras, such as the Z 9 and Z 7II. Modern digital cameras are marvels of imaging technology. Over the past 20 years, there has been a revolution in what sensors are capable of recording, both in terms of light gathering capacity and detail capture. At one time, seemingly not too long ago, 6MP was considered high-resolution, whereas the latest crop of full-frame mirrorless cameras can pack on 60MP with ease. Just as happened with the introduction of high-definition video, however, there are some added difficulties when working with such potential for detail recording. This Canon’s 10x zoom range beats that of the other full-frame compatible superzooms on test, matching the Nikon for a generously wide-angle view at the short and beating both the others for telephoto reach. It’s no surprise then that the Canon is a little larger and heavier than its full-frame competitors, with a 72mm rather than 67mm filter thread and weighing in at a still manageable 750g. Build quality feels solid although, typically of Canon’s non-L-series lenses, it doesn’t feature any weather-seals and the petal-shaped EW-78F hood is sold separately for around £35/$40. With its modest 28-200mm range, Tamron’s superzoom for Sony E-mount mirrorless cameras is neither particularly wide-angle nor telephoto. Even so, it gives a useful sweep of focal lengths on full-frame bodies, boosted to 42-300mm on APS-C format cameras. At its shortest focal length, the Tamron is a whole f/stop faster than the Canon and Nikon lenses and shrinks less to f/5.6 at the long end. Optical highlights include GM (Glass Moulded Aspherical), hybrid aspherical, LD (Low Dispersion) and XLD (eXtra Low Dispersion) elements. A long telephoto might be the first lens that springs to mind for capturing wildlife, but wide-angle lenses can open up opportunities too. A wide-angle can offer up a more dramatic perspective, and because a large proportion of a scene can be captured in a single frame, they also enable a subject to be captured within the context of their natural habitat. For instance, in the image pictured below, the empty space around the penguin works to convey the expansive environment. Conversely, if you want to capture an intimate portrait of a subject with a wide-angle, the main problem to overcome is that the animal needs to be rather closer to the lens. With the same wide-angle potential as the Canon lens on test, this Nikon doesn’t stretch quite as far in telephoto reach, but there’s not a whole lot in it.
