A Canon RF 200-500mm f/4L IS USM has been long rumoured and now the team over at Canon Rumors has managed to confirm its existence. We might even see it as soon as the end of this year. Canon already makes a similar EF version of this lens – the Canon EF 200-400mm f/4L IS USM Extender 1.4x. But the latest rumour suggests that to reduce the overall size and weight of the lens, the new RF version will forego the 1.4x teleconverter but will add an extra 100mm in focal length to compensate. Nikon has launched its first prime lens for the DX range of mirrorless lenses. The Nikkor Z DX 24mm f/1.7 joins four zoom lenses that are designed exclusively for Nikon’s APS-C sensor cameras – the Nikon Zfc, Z30 and Z50. The new 24mm f/1.7 lens provides a fast wide-angle lens that weighs just 135g (4.8oz) and measures 70x40mm (2.8 x 1.6in). It has a 36mm equivalent focal length when you take the crop factor into account. The lens is constructed from nine elements in eight groups, including two aspherical glass elements, uses a seven-blade iris diaphragm and has an 18cm minimum focus distance. Food photography, like many genres of product imaging, is rare in its blend of functionality and creativity. Many professional photographers find themselves shooting the same type of images over and over again, as is the norm for the ‘jobbing’ photographer. Clients often have highly specific requirements and there is, therefore, little room for true creativity at the professional level. Certain image styles just work and so there is often no need to venture far from the established photo setups, in whichever area we find ourselves specialising. Difficulty level: Intermediate Time taken: 1 hour Summer may be the favourite season of beachgoers and sunbathers, but it’s less favoured by landscape photographers. The strong lighting casts deep shadows and bright highlights, stripping the colour from natural elements such as water and vegetation. In contrast to shooting landscapes during the golden hours (as discussed in our feature in Issue 266), daytime lighting in the summer is possibly the worst for scenic imagery. This becomes even more apparent when we try to capture long-exposure shots. Lengthening the exposure time can be a great way to introduce some movement to static scenes but during harsh summer daytime lighting, it can be almost impossible to push the shutter speed above a whole second. The Fujifilm X-S20 has arrived with a few key upgrades over its threeyear-old predecessor, the X-S10. The headline feature of the X-S20 is its new and improved battery, with Fujifilm claiming an extra 800 more frames from a single charge than the previous version. The X-S20 weighs a diminutive 491g and the overall size and design of the X-S20 remain largely the same with a 2.36m-dot electronic viewfinder and a 1.84m-dot fullyarticulating LCD. Sigma has announced the world’s fastest 14mm lens – the Sigma 14mm F1.4 DG DN, available for Sony E-Mount and Panasonic/Leica/Sigma L-Mount. Sigma has designed this lens specifically for astrophotography, paying particular attention to optical aberrations and sagittal coma flare. The optical design includes one special low-dispersion, three fluorite low-dispersion, and four aspherical elements to improve corner sharpness and reduce chromatic aberration. This combination has also allowed Sigma to reduce the overall size and weight of the lens. As photographers, we often rely on long exposures to illuminate dimly lit scenes. However, slow shutter speeds can do more than just provide brightness – by physically moving the camera while the shutter curtain is open, familiar scenes can be presented in a fresh light. The recorded movements add a level of abstraction to an otherwise static photograph. This technique, called Intentional Camera Movement (ICM), allows photographers to create images that showcase their creativity and artistically manipulate the shot. Here, the emphasis is not on sharpness but on controlled blurring, which brings out colours and textures while highlighting the lines and patterns.
