THE MANX CLUB TOOK OVER BIG BEAR LAKE, CELEBRATING BRUCE MEYERS’ LIFE ACHIEVEMENTS The year 2021 was unforgettable for the Manx buggy community and the entire Volkswagen industry. An artist, inventor, surfer, lifeguard, WWII Kamikaze attack survivor, and original creator of the iconic Meyers Manx buggy, Bruce Meyers left us peacefully in February 2021. Therefore, the 25th Anniversary of the Big Bear Bash, which took over Big Bear Lake again, was held without Bruce for the first time. It turned out to be one of the biggest meets ever. Wolfgang Denzel (1908-1990) was a successful Austrian BMW motorcycle racer during the 1930s. He also was an importer for BMW motorcycles. During WWII he ran a facility repairing military vehicles. Postwar, Denzel opened his own repair shop, fixing motorcycles and cars, and putting together wartime Volkswagen Kübelwagens from the many wrecks that were available. In 1948, Wolfgang Denzel decided to build his own sports car at his facility in Vienna, Austria. This car was built on a Kübelwagen chassis and was heavily based on VW mechanical components. The first Denzel sports car body was made with a non-metallic composite material with the engine in the rear. Dannenhauer & Stauss (D&S) came to be in 1950, thanks to Gotthilf Dannenhauer and his son-in-law Kurt Stauss. The duo enlisted a company called Auto Technik to design their Sports Cabriolet, unveiled in 1951. D&S relied on a tested formula, using a Beetle platform and VW drivetrain. However, the Stuttgart-based firm faced the same hurdle as coachbuilder Rometsch: Volkswagen simply refused to sell them rolling chassis. This forced the small D&S to source the latter through dealers from Germany, Switzerland, and Scandinavia. The vehicle received several aesthetic tweaks over the years, such as a one-piece windshield in lieu of split windows, plus nose and tail sections extended a few inches in 1953. This month, we reached the one-year point on doing a complete restoration of Darrell Vittone’s last drag car. During the 1974 and 1975 racing seasons, Darrell raced this exact 1967 sedan in both NHRA’s A/MC and B/MC classes, setting one national record and earning two class Wallys. In the summer of 1975, this car was sold to Harvey Cox, who continued to race it, earning one more Wally at the 1975 Indy Nationals. From there, Steve Shook and Jimmy Fulton took over and earned two more Wallys and set two IHRA Records, before this car was placed in storage around 1985. It was late in 1969 and we were racing the Underdog Beetle in NHRA Modified Eliminator and chasing points. We were having a pretty good season and “in the game” so to speak. I believe it was September and we headed off to Sacramento for the Division 7 points meet. It was Doug Gordon, Mark Thurber, Eric Kaufman and me. We towed the “Dog” to Sacramento on an open-wheel buggy-type trailer with Doug’s ’66 VW Kombi, which was powered by a 2100cc motor I built for it, so there was reasonable power. Our lives would be a lot more boring without our air-cooled Volkswagens, wouldn’t they? Who doesn’t have some interesting story to tell involving a Beetle, Bus, Ghia, Buggy or Type 3? Sure, these stories don’t always have a positive outcome. However, in retrospect, these are often the most exciting stories. This is exactly what happened to me several ago.
