Colorado’s Bandimere Speedway’s is unlike any other drag racing facility in the country. This track’s roots go back to 1958 when John Bandimere, Sr. purchased a piece of property where he and his family built a small dragstrip — literally on the side of a mountain at 5,800-foot elevation! This facility grew gradually throughout the years, until it underwent a major $4 million improvement/expansion project in 1988. THE SMOOTHGATE BARNDOOR SINGLE CAB The Volkswagen truck has steel side gates, which fold down, making it a flatbed. The vehicle has perhaps a somewhat purer form than a Bus. It certainly features a unique clean profile, especially with the gates down. Speaking of the gates, the *purest* form of the truck is the early body style with “smooth” gates – these Single Cabs did not have the pressings we all are used to seeing. Smoothgates (as they are called in the VW scene) were made between August 1952 and November 1953. There are more than twice as many later pressed-gate Barndoor-era trucks known to exist than Smoothgates. In this article, I’ll be talking about axle boots. Most of you know what an axle boot is, but for those of you who do not, this is the boot that goes around the axle tube on a swing axle transmission or around the axle and CV of an IRS transmission. If you have a stock Bug, Ghia, Type 3 up to 1968, or Bus up to 1967, you have swing axles. If you have a 1968 and later Bus, 1969 and later Bug, Ghia, Type 3, or 1973-1974 Thing, you have IRS. Swing axle transmissions have one pivot point near the transmission on each side and the axle is in a tube. The boot covers this pivot point, keeps dirt out of the joint and oil in the transmission.…

Based in California’s Bay Area, the Golden Gate Chapter of the Vintage Volkswagen Club of America (GGCVVWCA) is one of the most active vintage-oriented VW clubs in the country. The group typically hosts two premier vintage events: the Kelley Park Show every year in April and Solvang’s VW Veteranentreffen every two years in September. Both meets are always on top of the list for vintage Volkswagen enthusiasts all over the world. The building of our engine for Darrell Vittone’s A/MC, took place at the Schley Brothers’ VW Museum, as this shop just oozes nostalgia from the early years of VW racing. As we mentioned last month, we are having Ron Fleming, along with Scott Pescuma do the actual assembly as we trust them without question. Last issue, we talked about the basic engine; a 2090cc, using an Empi 84mm crank, Empi 5.5-inch long H-beam rods, 89mm Empi/Mahle pistons within a fully machined ’72 AS-41 universal case. Now it’s time to see if all this cool stuff fits together without killing our already bleeding pocketbook. There are several vintage VW toys and models that are a mystery as far as origin and manufacturer to the VW toy collectors. Some of these are hard to identify because no manufacture markings or some cryptic markings were stamped on the toys per se. Several have been identified only from a name or an insignia that appears on the original shipping carton they were sold in or some strange letter stamping on the car. Many of the vintage Split Window VW toys are hard enough to locate, let alone finding them in their original shipping carton to get a clue of the origin.
