The BMW Art Car program began with French racing driver and art enthusiast Hervé Poulain, who invited his friend, renowned artist Alexander Calder, to transform his 1975 BMW 3.0 CSL race car into a moving canvas. With the support of Jochen Neerpasch, then head of BMW Motorsport, the first BMW Art Car was born – and quickly became a fan favorite on the track. Since that pioneering moment, BMW has added to the collection at select intervals, commissioning singular works from celebrated artists including Andy Warhol, David Hockney, and Jeff Koons.
