At ELLE DECOR, we've been doing a lot of looking recently. We've been paging through dozens of magazines searching for homes for this issue, our annual roundup of the best of our 24 global editions. And we've been examining our own work of the past several years, selecting the rooms we admire most in the process of putting together our third book, which will be published this fall by Abrams. And because this year marks a quarter-century of ELLE DECOR, we are beginning to assemble special sections that will appear throughout 2014, culminating in our 25th-anniversary issue in September. "I hate glued-on storefronts," says Tomas Maier, creative director of Bottega Veneta, about the interchangeable retail outlets that can be found in any of the world's major cities. His design for the new Bottega Veneta Maison in Milan has been carefully tailored to its surroundings, an 18th-century building on Via Sant'Andrea. Since 2001, Maier's considered and discreet approach to the concept of luxury has become as much a hallmark of the house as its signature intrecciato woven leather; this 11,000-square-foot space, which plays host to the complete range of Bottega products, accordingly exhibits his characteristic restraint. Stripped back to highlight the original architectural features, the Maison is modeled on the intimacy of a domestic interior, with a subtly differentiated palette that evolves from manifold shades of gray in the menswear…

Fellini, Pasolini, Gilliam, Scorsese: In the more than four decades since Dante Ferretti started designing movie sets, the native Italian has worked for some of cinema's most iconic directors. An exhibition on the legendary production designer's career at New York's Museum of Modern Art ("Dante Ferretti: Design and Construction for the Cinema," on view until February 9) illustrates how this visual maestro draws on his knowledge of art and architecture, designing sets that are often entirely built by hand. While his methods might seem old-fashioned, his services are still very much in demand. Now working on the set of Kenneth Branagh's Cinderella, Ferretti has already been snapped up by Martin Scorsese to conjure Frank Sinatra's world for the director's next film project. The tray table might be the ultimate double-duty piece. Compact and lightweight, it can be transported wherever you need a handy surface. A direct descendant of the butler's serving table, it's also the ultimate entertaining accessory, with a lift-off top that allows you to carry drinks and hors d'oeuvres to guests. When space is limited, it can often be folded up and stored in a corner. "A tray table is a very sensible and practical piece," says designer and artist Richard Shapiro. "But you can dress it up as well, with books or even some interesting crystal vessels." For a long time, observes decorator Ellie Cullman, tray tables were considered old-fashioned. WHEN THEY ENVISIONED their dream vacation home on the small island of Langeland, in southern Denmark, Vagn and Inge-Marie Hansen had to admit that their fantasy had little in common with the wood cottage that Vagn inherited from his parents there, on a stretch of beach facing the sea. Over some 40 years, the original structure had been added on to with materials that had become outdated. And it was habitable only in the summer, whereas the couple wanted to use the place year-round with their kids and grandchildren. "A few years ago, when we considered cutting back our workloads, we started searching for inspiring houses and buildings to get ideas," Vagn recalls. "On our travels, we were always on the lookout for something special for our house on Langeland."…

"Out of the ground and into the light" is how Frank Lloyd Wright characterized his plan for the campus of Florida Southern College, in Lakeland, home to the largest single-site collection of Wright architecture in the world. The campus was commissioned in 1936, and 12 of the 18 structures Wright devised were completed, including a library, two chapels, and a planetarium. But the rest remained ideas—until this past November, when the ribbon was cut on a brand-new building made from a decades-old plan. The 1,700-square-foot space, originally intended for faculty housing, is one of the architect's famed Usonian homes, all of which were modestly sized, constructed of native materials, and designed as beautiful, dignified, affordable options for middle-class families. When the American Ballet Theatre celebrated its opening-night gala in October at New York City's Lincoln Center, the evening air was still and the weather unseasonably warm. The atmosphere inside the David H. Koch Theater, however, was a lot more tempestuous. First, the guests—a dazzling crowd that included celebrity ballet fans Sigourney Weaver, Bebe Neuwirth, and Alan Cumming—were swept up in a fantastical maelstrom: ABT artist in residence Alexei Ratmansky's The Tempest, a world-premiere ballet based on the Shakespeare play. The performance, which starred dancer Marcelo Gomes and featured sets by Santo Loquasto, was followed by a dinner dance on the theater's promenade. When the future King Edward VII of England proclaimed Cartier "jeweler to kings and king of jewelers," he wasn't exaggerating. Since its founding in 1847 by Louis-François Cartier, the renowned Paris house has provided royals—as well as tycoons, socialites, and movie stars—with dazzling confections: belle epoque diadems, Art Deco brooches, Tutti Frutti bracelets, jeweled cigarette cases, and, for King Farouk of Egypt, gold toothpicks. Cartier's sublime alchemy, mixing ingenuity, craftsmanship, and refinement, can be seen in the geometric simplicity of the 1919 Tank watch, or in a staggering necklace set with 2,930 diamonds created for the maharaja of Patiala, India. I have always loved skiing. After hitting the slopes, everyone craves après-ski comfort cuisine, and this rustic dish of braised and crusted pork shoulder is a crowd-pleaser. American butchers call this cut of meat "pork butt" or "Boston butt." It's the same rich cut used for pulled pork, with alternating layers of lean meat and fat that help it to stay moist. I've given it a crust of bread crumbs, mustard, thyme, and horseradish, and an accompaniment of sautéed Brussels sprouts. I fell in love with crusted meats when I worked with the great chef Roger Vergé, who taught me the Provençal technique of crusting a leg of lamb with garlic, herbs, orange zest, butter, and bread crumbs. FROM HER VERY FIRST GLIMPSE of the Atlas Mountains through an airplane window, Philomena Merckoll knew she was going to fall in love with Morocco. She and her mother discovered the country together in 2005 and were instantly seduced by the energy and atmosphere of Marrakech. Soon afterward, she decided to look for a home there. Riad Mena, on the outskirts of the medina, is the result. Today, after several years of restoration work and a good deal of imagination, the place blends traditional elements and modern touches into one cohesive and elegant whole. In the 1940s and '50s, the self-taught Italian designer Gino Sarfatti created lighting that echoed the elegant yet playful spirit of the furniture by his fellow countrymen Gio Ponti and Franco Albini. Sarfatti's company, Arteluce, based in Milan, became a fun house of futuristic shapes, from starburst ceiling fixtures to conical torchieres. But Sarfatti went beyond aesthetics, overseeing every step of product development and using then-innovative components, such as halogen bulbs. When he retired in 1973, he sold his Arteluce designs to the cutting-edge lighting firm Flos. Now Flos is putting five of Sarfatti's signature designs back into production, painstakingly adapting each lamp with 21st-century technologies. Old Turkish cauldrons, the curve of a cavalry horse's leg, and tulips (symbols of the Ottoman Empire) are all among the inspirations for Zeynep Fadillioglu's first furniture collection. The Turkish designer is based in Istanbul, with an office in London and clients around the globe. But she may be best known as the first (and perhaps only) woman to design a public mosque, the Sakirin mosque on the Asian side of Istanbul. Fadillioglu's furniture, much like the mosque, is unexpectedly modern, despite drawing from the historically rich city where she was raised. "Istanbul is a mix of ancient civilizations, and you see so many different styles here—Hittite, Byzantine, Christian, Ottoman, Islamic," she explains. "I like to think that my furniture is of the moment, with a touch of ancient times."…

A pendant lamp shaped like a straw hat, a curvy take on the classic straight-back Windsor chair: Paola Navone's recently launched collection of furniture and housewares for Crate & Barrel shines a spotlight on this Italian designer's witty creations. In Europe, Navone, who lives in Paris and maintains a studio in Milan, has long been a design star. She is a fixture at the annual Salone del Mobile, where she exhibits furniture and tableware for such top firms as Molteni & C, Gervasoni, Driade, Armani/Casa, and Roche Bobois.
