WHEN THE ELLE DECOR A-LIST WAS INTRODUCED 10 YEARS ago, it celebrated the work of 25 designers (and five to watch!). Almost all of those names continue to appear on our annual directory of the top talents in the business, and they have since been joined by many other voices and visions—too many, some have suggested. The argument is that an A-List of 125 designers dilutes our original mission to salute the absolute best. We, however, believe that it only makes the list stronger, fortifying our mission to cover the best in the world and to make sure that the A-List also reflects that world. IF YOU TYPE COCO CHANEL black and white into a search engine, you will return a wealth of pithy quotes and stylistic references attesting to her love of this pairing. After all, upon founding her eponymous fashion house in 1910, Chanel embedded into our aesthetic lexicon a bounty of monochromatic tropes: little black dresses with a creamy camellia, say, or the juxtaposition of black lacquer and light carpeting, as in her rue Cambon abode in Paris. IT’S A COMFORT IN TUMULTUOUS TIMES TO REMEMBER that even places we think of as unchanging often have, in fact, been through many incarnations, emerging more interesting. Case in point: Manhattan’s lower Fifth Avenue. Plutocrats of the 1800s bought up the stretch and built capacious private mansions. But once the wealthy migrated uptown toward Central Park and laws barred at-home piecework, developers of the mid- to late 19th century tore all that down to erect the Ladies’ Mile, a corridor of buildings with loftlike retail and offices to serve the so-called carriage trade, many of which were done in the elegant Beaux Arts style. In the 10 years since ELLE DECOR inaugurated the A-List, our annual roster of the best design talents has grown from 25 to 125 global firms. We even created an A-List devoted to architects, allowing us to focus here on spotlighting the decorators who bring joy and great style to our homes. If 2020 has taught us anything, it’s that a safe and welcoming home is essential to our well-being, and that talent is everywhere. INVEST IN A QUALITY MATTRESS When it comes to getting a good night’s sleep, “the mattress is the most important element,” says Kraiem. “My key recommendation is to source one from a company with a good, long-lasting reputation, like Stearns & Foster.” 2. WHEN CERTAIN CITY SLICKERS DECAMP TO GREENER pastures, the luckiest take their decorators with them. For a lodge in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, a devoted client flew out New York City–based designer Jeffrey Bilhuber to a land of bucking broncos and Arcadian vistas, bringing his signature brand of American eclecticism to a rustic perch under the penumbra of the Teton mountains. For many longtime New Yorkers, the name Jackson Hole evokes images of gray-colored hamburgers served in a hazy room on the Upper East Side of Manhattan where the air was equal parts oxygen and grease. But recently, there’s been a mass migration of the needle-tower crowd to the quaint frontier town for which the diner was named. Jackson Hole may have a population of just 10,000, but the homeowners here…

When Rose Chol-mondeley approached de Gournay about a bespoke wallpaper, the firm’s director, Hannah Cecil Gurney, was intrigued. Cholmondeley is the marchioness of Houghton Hall, the 18th-century estate of former British prime minister Robert Walpole; she had found five panels of the original chinoiserie paper from the home’s cabinet room. The social-media app is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year, too. Beautiful images are the stock-in-trade of great design, so it’s no surprise that Instagram has revolutionized the decor world since it first appeared on our iPhones a decade ago. With its direct access to an image-hungry public, the app allowed newcomers like Paloma Contreras, Alyssa Kapito, and Mark D. Sikes to build their brands, while star designers like Nate Berkus and Kelly Wearstler reached out to delight fans with a steady stream of selfies—from Pilates sessions to candid family pics. Even such icons as Bunny Williams and Charlotte Moss have gotten into the act, sharing intimate peeks at their living spaces. The result is an endless, addictive loop of eye-candy interiors.…
