Something evocative of Old Hollywood, à la Paul Revere Williams, perhaps? Something glitteringly modernist (think Gio Ponti)? Or outlandish and singular (I’m looking at you, Kelly Wearstler)? Glamour is most commonly associated with the ornamented, the gilded, and the reflective. As a Leo and a city kid, I dig that. But in these anxious times, I’ve lately found myself reaching for a kind of swaddling glamour, one that envelops even as it dazzles. Take, for instance, our cover story, the drop-dead-gorgeous family home of Hollywood power couple Mara Brock Akil and Salim Akil, designed by Tiffany Howell of the studio Night Palm. In her piece, writer Marjon Carlos and Brock Akil talk about the power of glamour to bring joy, fun, and centeredness into moments of despair and chaos in…

“ We’re glamorous. We like Champagne. We need an ashtray.”—KOUROS MAGHSOUDI While it’s tempting to compare our current moment in history to the Roaring Twenties, it’s the 1960s and ’70s that feel most apropos—Space Age optimism melded with disco drive. Refreshingly, how—and why—we come together is once again at the forefront of designers’ minds. Take, for instance, the work of Kouros Maghsoudi, whose first collection was aptly titled Mehmooni—the Farsi word for “party”—and featured a table with a built-in ice bucket. Maghsoudi showed a suite of recycled-aluminum chairs last spring for New York Design Week, installed at Ian Schrager’s Public Hotel, each draped with a rotating phalanx of models. He dubbed the new collection Go-Go Age, updating ’60s references—notably the bright lacquered colors and plastic seating designs of Joe Colombo—with…
Known for its fashion and handmade leather luggage, Louis Vuitton has a history of dabbling in furniture while doing it their way—both an 1874 bed for a French explorer and a 1929 mobile desk for a British conductor were folded into the brand’s signature monogrammed trunks. But 10 years ago, Vuitton expanded the notion of mobile design when it launched Objets Nomades at Design Miami. The first collection included pieces by such designers as Christian Liaigre, Patricia Urquiola, and Atelier Oï, along with British duo Barber Osger by, whose cordless LED Bell lamp—a frosted-glass lantern with a leather carrying strap—was an instant hit and is still a bestseller. Today, Objets Nomades is still going strong. Along with accessories, the line’s newest pieces are a tad hefty for the modern nomad;…
Are you in the habit of strolling your neighborhood wearing a Pucci unitard, dragged along by matching saluki hounds straining on diamond-studded leashes? Are you able to drape yourself upon Marc Newson’s iconic metal Lockheed Lounge without slithering onto the floor? A truly glamorous person (see: Marlene Dietrich, Marchesa Casati, Violet Chachki, Cardi B) does all of this without batting a lash—and before breakfast. But what exactly is glamour? Surely it’s more than salukis and a unitard. The truth is, whether we are talking about decor, fashion, or a particular person, glamour is an elusive, slippery little vixen who resists definition. Webster’s dictionary unhelpfully defines it as “an exciting and often illusory and romantic attractiveness.” Academic Judith C. Brown refers to glamour as “an experience that moves one out of…
