ABOUT A DECADE AGO, it became popular to look to luxury hotels for design inspiration. Excited by their travels, people proclaimed they wanted their homes to be as cosseting as a five-star suite, with every convenience at their fingertips. As much as I appreciate king-size beds, tiny toiletries, and big, fluffy towels, I’ve never understood this infatuation. To me, a luxury hotel is a lovely diversion, a getaway, and a nice escape from the real world. But I have always felt one’s home should be a lot more personal, even quirky, than a hotel suite, no matter how expansive and beautifully appointed it might be. Classic illustrations by Edmund Dulac and Arthur Rackham complement fantastical interpretations by Alexander McQueen, who embellished a gown with copper-colored beads to evoke Rapunzel’s hair, and Christian Louboutin, who reimagined Dorothy’s ruby slippers as stilettos (January 15–April 16; fitnyc.edu). Meanwhile, Paris department store Le Bon Marché Rive Gauche commissioned artist Ai Weiwei to adorn its winter sale with a display of kitelike dragons…
