In 2013, when then–27-year-old software engineer Tracy Chou glanced around her San Francisco office and realized she was one of only 11 women on Pinterest’s 89-person team—a team tasked with building a site whose users are predominantly female, no less—she decided to post an online form inviting her peers to report the gender breakdown in their own offices, with similarly damning results: Respondents listed just 17 women on Yelp’s 206-engineer team. At Dropbox, the breakdown was 42 female engineers in 384. When Chou released her findings in a blog post called “Where Are the Numbers?,” what started as one woman’s research quest soon became part of a greater initiative pressuring large organizations like Google and Facebook to release their closely guarded diversity data.
