But here at ELLE, it’s always been top of mind: Each month, we shine a light on the latest in conservation news. GABRIELA HEARST “I always look at sustainability as a practice,” says designer Gabriela Hearst. “It’s a complicated process, but you set goals for yourself.” Since the launch of her brand in 2015, Hearst has made a commitment to green luxury by crafting pieces from natural, biodegradable fibers. Her vision of eco-friendly high fashion has been a critical hit. In 2017, she took home the prestigious International Woolmark Prize (past winners include Karl Lagerfeld and Yves Saint Laurent). ZARIA FORMAN ARCTIC MESSENGER Zaria Forman saw her first glacier in 2007. She was 23, a recent grad of Skidmore’s studio art program who’d grown up just north of Manhattan in a home well stocked with paints, crayons, and charcoal sticks. That summer’s trip to western Greenland was one of many her family embarked on to the globe’s least-developed corners, courtesy of her mother, landscape photographer Rena Bass Forman. Fifty-nine years ago, Jane Goodall, an animal lover with no formal academic training, traveled to Gombe, Tanzania, to observe chimpanzees for famed anthropologist Louis Leakey. Within months, the 26-year-old witnessed a chimp extracting termites from a mound using long blades of grass, upending mankind’s very understanding of itself: Humans were no longer the only species to make tools, no longer unequivocally superior. Ever since I could read, my time-honored method of dealing with any kind of uncertainty has been to flood the zone with data. Terrifying-seeming symptom? Tossing your empty products in the recycling bin isn’t as virtuous as you might think: Only 9 percent of the waste we’ve sent to be recycled has actually been recycled. According to a 2017 study by the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the other 91 percent ends up in landfills or incinerated. Anyone who thinks the fashion industry doesn’t care about climate change would have done well to drop in at the Collina Strada show at New York Fashion Week in February. Models walked the runway wearing a collection made from 75 percent dead-stock (surplus) fabric, accompanied not by a thudding bass but by a rousing speech from the teenage environmental activist Xiuhtezcatl Martinez. The beads on the clothes came from recycled ocean plastic, a collaboration with the organization 4Ocean. FRANCISCO COSTA Last winter, former Calvin Klein creative director Francisco Costa pivoted industries, launching the artisanal skin care and home fragrance brand Costa Brazil. The sustainable line attracted instant cult fanfare, and now the second round of products is ready for a summer rollout. The new star item: a concentrated body cream without any added water. “The only water that’s in the cream is from the juice of the ingredients, which is a very beautiful way of doing it,” he says. This allows the main ingredients, like tucuma seed oil and orange blossom, to remain more active. When Glossier started selling face mist and skin tint in 2014, a devoted fan base was born almost overnight. Loyalists commented on images of Glossier’s highlighters and cream eye shadows with all the zeal of a real-life bestie: “Dreeeeeamyyy.” “J’adore.” “Stunning.” But this past March, Glossier and its BFFs had a bit of a falling-out.
