Australian comedienne Hannah Gadsby’s one-person show, Nanette (on Netflix), won a host of plaudits last year. It’s a riveting and extremely uncomfortable piece of work, so be warned: if you’re looking for laughs, this is not the place. But it made me think long and hard about a lot of things: humour in general and, more specifically, the use of it to mask hurt and abuse. According to my teenagers, I show bad form on social media. My crime is this: I don’t believe I have to respond immediately when I receive a WhatsApp. I can hear my phone bleep, but I ignore it until it suits me to pick it up. Sometimes I read my messages only before bed, and then, surmising that the senders are probably already asleep, I switch off, planning to respond in the morning. I even remember to do so on occasion. If you swear by the Keto diet, then you may think wine is completely off the menu. And – since living Keto means extremely low to no carbs – you’re probably right. But for special occasions, look out for dry, low-alcohol wines (less than 13,5 percent) with low residual sugar (RS). RS isn’t listed on the bottle, but here are some broad strokes to guide you: Heavier reds (Shiraz, Pinotage) are usually higher in alcohol, and whites often have more RS to balance the acidity. Q: I’ve tried various home remedies to sort out my loud snoring, but to no avail. What could be the cause and what medication can I use? GOING SOLO Cabernet Franc and Grenache have long been in South Africa, but historically they’ve been used mainly in blends: Cab Franc for its earthy grassiness and Grenache for its slightly peppery, ripe berry flavour. Now they’ve left the band to pursue solo careers, and they’re both becoming very popular very quickly.
