IN AUGUST, MYHERITAGE <www.myheritage.com> announced it had purchased a controlling share of French site Filae <www.filae.com>. Filae, founded as NotreFamilie.com in 1994, hosts more than a billion French genealogy records, including civil registrations, church documents, censuses, and casualty lists. According to a press release, Filae will remain a standalone subscription service, though its records will also be available to MyHeritage users.
Later that month, Ancestry.com <www.ancestry.com> revealed its own acquisition of Geneanet <en.geneanet.org>, a France-based genealogy website that has 4 million users. Geneanet will also remain a standalone service, with its subscribers receiving access to some of Ancestry.com’s collections as part of their subscription plans.
