Prior to the 17th century, the area now known as Michigan (from the Ojibwe word Michigama, or “great water”) was home to several American Indian tribes, including the Chippewa/Ojibwe, Odawa/Ottawa, Potawatomi, Menominee, and Wyandot/Huron.
