Especially from the late-19th to mid-20th century, look for obituaries of the deceased. (Before and after that, mostly prominent citizens were honored this way.) Papers also might carry regular lists of deaths, probate cases, marriage licenses issued, and births.
2 SEEMINGLY MUNDANE HAPPENINGS
Especially in small towns, newspapers covered everyday events you won’t find in today’s news: birthday parties and social club meetings (often with names of attendees), out-of-town visitors, residents’ minor illnesses and injuries, and more. In addition to names, search for employers, clubs, churches and street addresses.
3 DETAILS ON FAMILY STORIES
Turn to newspapers when you can’t document an ancestral event or you suspect your ancestor was involved in a newsworthy occurrence (such as a crime or local celebration).
