Eighty years ago, a new kind of vehicle drove into the world. Months before the U.S. entered into World War II, military leaders had a plan to build hundreds of thousands of light trucks that could go anywhere, serve a hundred purposes, and become known simply as “jeeps.” Within 17 months, during some of the darkest moments of the war, planners in Washington, D.C., were wondering how this same “jeep” could be used to feed a post-war world. Sometimes a pile of rust has more appeal than a beautiful, like-new paint job. We like our 1934 Dodge pickup just like it is. Almost everyone that sees us driving down the street agrees, as evidenced by the high signs, horn toots and “thumbs up” that we get. It took 87 years to develop this beautiful look. Our truck worked hard on a farm for many years, then spent several years in storage with lumber and other materials stacked on it. We have a copy of the original build paper – yes, it had paint in 1934 (green). We were told a nurseryman bought it new and used it on his farm in Compton, California. Unique solution to a common problem My granddad would ride his horse up to the gate, pull a pin and the gate would fly out of the pocket and swing the other way. He’d ride through and place the gate in the pocket by putting the pin back in place without getting off his horse. He had three gates of this kind on the farm. They were used until 1946. The musket barrels still had the nipples in the barrels. Three muskets were destroyed. The cedar top pole was long and quite large. Last issue, we learned a little about the early life of Alexander “Sandy” Legge up to 1891, when he began a 40-year career with the McCormick Harvesting Machine Co. In 1902, McCormick became part of International Harvester Co. Legge later led International Harvester in the long and bitter but eventually successful battle with Henry Ford for supremacy in the farm tractor market. Growing up on a Nebraska ranch, Legge worked as a farmer, cowboy, thresherman and farm machinery assembler before hiring on with McCormick as a bill collector. Because of his experience as a Wyoming cowpuncher, Legge was often referred to in company correspondence as “that young cowboy,” and he quickly gained a reputation as a fearless, resourceful and successful bill collector. This story started out rather innocently in August 2021, when Dwight Merry assisted his neighbor, Lauren Anderson, rescue a VACengine-powered Case pull-type combine. The combine had been given to Lauren by Dan DeVaney 20 years earlier. Lauren then left for home with the unit, sporting brand new tires. Dan’s brother, Bob, then asked Dwight to get into the pickup with him and go take a look at an old Case 2M picker that had once belonged to Bob’s dad, Bob DeVaney Sr. Located in the grove, the picker featured a host of improvements, including a wider wagon elevator and grease banks for easy lubrication.
