In this hobby, we try to imagine life more than a century ago. In 1900, most Americans had heard of electricity, telephones and radios, but few in rural America had access to such technology. One source suggests that by 1940, nearly one-half of all residences in America lacked hot piped water, a tub or shower, or a flush toilet. Steam engines were on the move before 1900; the earliest farm tractors just barely hit the ground before the turn of a new century. One hundred and twenty-two years later, satellites and global positioning systems have become a critically important part of agriculture. Nearly 100 years ago, an early October issue of the Farm and Dairy, a weekly farm paper still published in Salem, Ohio, carried the following news item: “Corn cutters throughout Ohio are making between $9 and $14 a day. The prevailing rate is from 18 to 20 cents a shock and the average cutter is able to dispose of 50 shocks a day. N.E. Shaw of the state agriculture department knows of one man who cut 80 shocks from sunup to sundown and received 25 cents a shock.” Even though the Armistice ending the Great War had gone into effect in November 1918, the wartime boom continued through 1919. Many soldiers were still on occupation duty and had not yet been demobilized. This meant that farm labor was in short supply…

I was unable to find an address for the William Galloway & Sons Co., but from what I am able to find online, the company is no longer in existence. I am sending these on to your magazine. It is interesting what triggers a person’s passion to collect and preserve a piece of American history. For 91-year-old Colorado rancher Robert “Bob” Emick, a decadeslong pursuit of resurrecting the country’s earliest and often forgotten waterpumping windmills began in 1981 with the discovery of a photograph showing his Aunt Elizabeth Hasser’s homestead at the turn of the 20th century near Lamar, Colorado. The vintage image showed an original Eclipse windmill next to the house. That was the moment that Bob knew he had to have one of these wooden windmills. Evidence of the former Eclipse was discovered earlier by Bob’s wife, Helen, when the family garden was prepared. When the soil was tilled, iron pieces were churned up. Young people today don’t know what an “icebox” is. Before electricity was available in rural areas, people had to start planning and preparing for hot summer days in the middle of bitterly cold winter. Ice was taken from lakes, streams, or stock dams. I don’t remember any concern about clean water. They just wanted the ice to be at least 1 foot thick. Ice harvest was like summer threshing. Several families would get together to cut ice blocks. Usually, the ice was cut with a large-tooth saw quite similar to a cross-cut timber saw. The ice was sawed into square blocks about 18-24 inches square. When the blocks were cut, they were pulled out of the water onto uncut ice that had formed on top of the lake. The blocks…
