The longer you listen to stories from and about farmers and old iron enthusiasts, the more family becomes the central focus of discussion. The “I fixed this up for my grandkids to use” or “I hang out with my dad by restoring tractors” type of people are a common part of both communities. I suppose I’m no exception though. My own grandfather was a hobby farmer for decades before I was born, and his family has a long tradition of farming starting before they came to the U.S. My transition to being the lead editor here on Farm Collector prompted him to bring out some of his old photo albums from his own mother and grandfather so he could show off some of the vintage (well, new at the time)…

Barn Again Hame Ends I can usually relate personally to each issue of Farm Collector and this June/July issue was true to form. Looking at the cartoon, I took out part of a fence, instead of with a mower, with a tandem disc being pulled by dad’s 70 diesel John Deere tractor. The potato picking belt was exactly like Grandpa’s picking belt I lost in a recent barn fire, and the mystery tool page usually has something I can identify or have something that needs identifying. As a youth, around 70 years ago, I had carefully saved many implements, tools, and harness in my grandfather’s barn. Well, I celebrate (if “celebrate” is the proper word) another birthday in August, and I’m waxing nostalgic about the good old days. In case you hadn’t noticed, that’s a common failing among us “old geezers.” When I was a kid on the farm during the 1940s, we grew corn, oats, wheat and hay. That was the standard order of crop rotation and Dad taught me how to remember it by using the word cow followed by hay (cows eat hay, right?). The hay was mostly a clover and timothy mixture and was put into my uncle’s barn with the hayfork. The grain harvest was the big deal of the season. First wheat and then oats were cut with a McCormick-Deering ground-driven grain binder pulled by the Farmall F-30 tractor. My…

It is with mixed feelings that we, Travis and Shirley Jorde, write this. We have reached a point in our lives at 85 years old that we have decided to pass Jorde’s Decals on to a new owner. My dad had a 1950 John Deere Model B that my kids drove on his farm in Kentucky when they were growing up. Never forgetting that wonderful experience, my oldest son, Allen, bought this 1946 Model B years later in Madera, California, and hauled it to southern California on April 18, 2002. Before then, it had rested in a not-very-protective barn for about 30 years. The tractor was purchased new in 1946 by a returning World War II veteran during a period when veterans were given priority access to new tractors. He purchased it in Los Banos, California, and had driven it nearly 50 miles to his farm in Madera. He had a dairy and he raised hay and other cattle feed. The tractor never left his farm until we…

This old iron hobby of ours attracts many more men than women; I suppose this is because more men work, or have worked, with tractors and machinery, and they pass this interest onto their sons. … So, as a woman who goes to vintage vehicle shows, who has her own tractor, and who writes articles about old machinery, I’m often seen as a bit of an oddity. I don’t mind this at all, because in many ways I’ve always been rather a square peg in a round hole. I have, for instance, always been more attracted to the idea of welding than I have been to the idea of cake baking, and I’ve always been better at using a cement mixer than I have been at using an iron.
