I’ve always been something of a history buff. Although, it’d probably be more accurate to call me a “story buff,” but history and the stories that come from it certainly qualify. At least, they do in my case. Farm collectibles and old iron fit neatly into a very tangible form of history. Old agricultural and industrial practices may have passed by the wayside, but we can still see and learn how they were done and, more importantly, the tools they were done with. Rural Minnesota Memories In the last issue I got (June/July 2024), you had an article about oxen. My dad was born in the northwest corner of the North Section 31 Milford township, Brown County, Minnesota, in 1888. Somewhere in his teens or early 20s, he moved to Cass County, Minnesota, where he had a brother, Emil, and half-brother Gus. This photo of his oxen team was taken there. He used horse collars, upside-down on the oxen. In the spring of 1918, he was drafted, and on November 11, 1918, it was the Armistice. He then spent time until 1923 in North Dakota, then came back to the area where he was born. He sold firewood until 1935. He cleared the timber off of a valley property of 35 acres. I’m…

The Massey-Harris company’s roots have been in southern Ontario, Canada, since just before the middle of the 19th century. Daniel Massey was 49 in 1847 when he turned over operation of his successful farm on the northern shore of Lake Ontario to his 21-year-old son, Hart. The elder Massey had become interested in labor-saving farm machinery (some accounts characterize it as more of an obsession) and determined to become a manufacturer. He took a partner, R.F. Vaughan, who owned a small foundry and machine shop, but who was starving for capital. The two men began the manufacture, using iron castings and wood, of simple implements such as plows, harrows, scufflers (cultivators) and rollers. Colorado-born and Oregon-bred, Erl McLaughlin owns a family farm in northeastern Oregon outside “tiny Enterprise.” Erl’s lifelong love of agriculture, which he claims borders on obsession, led to the establishment of Sunrise Iron, LLC, a museum where he houses his extensive collection of more than 35 vintage tractors, at least that many farm implements that date back as far as 1835 and hundreds of other vintage items from the 1800s and early 1900s. “Many of my collection pieces are extremely rare,” Erl says. “It’s my tribute to North America’s agricultural heritage from the 1800s and 1900s.” Among his collection are five hard-rubber tire trucks from 1912, a 1928 16-32 Nichols & Shepard tractor from the Lauson Line (found in the Canadian province of Alberta), a number of horsedrawn wagons, original…

Montgomery Ward was one of the largest catalog retailers in the early 1900s. Their massive annual catalog was mailed to millions of households in the United States. The catalog was filled with items of all kinds: clothing, all manner of household goods, medicine, musical instruments, farm implements and tools, and most anything else you might need. Montgomery Ward was generally not the manufacturer of the goods but had huge warehouses that they shipped from, as well as shipping some items direct from the factories. For manufacturers, having your product included in the Montgomery Ward catalog generally meant a big boost to your sales. Growing up with five older brothers, all of whom used to mess around with old tractors, I finally decided I was going to join the fold and buy my own tractor at 28 years old. I had just moved to a place on the west coast of Wales with 8 acres of land, and I was determined to start doing a bit of “old style” farming.
