I actually have a personal story for this issue’s First Things. On Memorial Day weekend of this year, I joined my family on a brief trip north to my parents’ hometown. We have a tradition of meeting with our extended family who live in the area on that weekend. While I was there, we saw the old tractor seat chair my great-uncle had made years ago, which sat in my father’s childhood home. With permission, we brought it home to cleanup. Hardly a month goes by that I don’t see a request for help with a non-sparking, high-tension magneto on one of the tractor or engine forums. It’s likely there are a lot more owners of bad magnetos out there who haven’t visibly requested help. Using an analog ohm meter or multimeter and a 9V battery, this paper is intended to give you the likely reason that your magneto isn’t producing a spark. Translations across the Pond Your article on the Ferguson tractor is most interesting. I expect that there are entire books on the three point hitch, but you managed to avoid getting bogged down in all the details of the system. That is a feat in itself. I did run into one “translation” which I simply did not understand. In the second paragraph, you note: “…so when he was given the chance to leave the farming life and the graft that went with it…” My American Heritage Dictionary (this side of the pond) has definitions for “graft,” which apply to horticulture and to conduct that makes unscrupulous use of one’s position.
