The radish plant (Raphanus raphanistrum subsp. sativus) belongs to the Brassicaceae family. We all know the red radish, but other cultivars come in shades of pink, rose, scarlet, pure white, yellow and green.
Radishes are grown around the world, and mostly eaten raw as a crunchy salad vegetable. They have a pungent, slightly spicy flavour, varying in intensity according to the environment.
Radishes suffer from few pests and diseases and are sometimes grown as companion plants. Good companions include lettuce, leeks, spinach, carrots, beets, cucumbers, squashes, onions, tomatoes, peppers, beans and peas.
Radishes can help repel cucumber beetles, which means that cucumbers, with their long growing season, are ideal companion plants for radishes.
