I have been practising wushu (kung fu) for several years at the leading kung fu institute in Africa. Kung fu is the root of all martial arts, including the more commonly known karate and judo, and consists of kicks, punches, throws, joint locks and wrestling. There are various styles of kung fu, such as the Shaolin or Wudang styles, and, of course, the wellknown Shaolin animal styles, such as tiger, dragon, crane, snake and mantis.
In order to grade at the institute where I train, a general knowledge of the history and development of kung fu is required, as well as a general knowledge of the lineage of the institute.
