At the time of writing, tensions were quickly escalating in the Middle East. For those who have not been following the news in this regard, here is a quick recap: on 7 October 2023, members of Hamas, which has been labelled a terrorist organisation by the US and UK governments, as well as others, but notably not by South Africa, crossed from Gaza into Israel and killed 1 200 Israelis and kidnapped around 200 more. On 8 October, Hezbollah, also labelled a terrorist organisation by the US and UK, fired guided rockets and artillery shells at Israeli positions in the occupied Shebaa Farms.
