The 2024 wildfire season in South Africa has been the country’s worst in nearly a decade, with the lives of 34 people, 19 of whom were firefighters, lost to the flames by October.
KwaZulu-Natal alone recorded 15 fatalities. Countrywide, over 3,9 million hectares were scorched, 66 buildings and 22 vehicles destroyed, and more than 2 000 livestock animals were lost.
In October, Mpumalanga, the hardest-hit province, declared a fire disaster, with damage recorded at an estimated R21 billion.
Speaking to Farmer’s Weekly, Linton Rensburg, team leader for stakeholder relations at the Working on Fire (WoF) Kishugu Joint Venture, said between the beginning of January and 2 December 2024, they responded to a staggering 2 436 fire incidents across the country.
