WHY USE METHANOL INJECTION? You’ll have read countless builds throughout these pages that mention methanol injection like Tom’s ST here, but why do people use it? To put it simply, a water/methanol injection usually enters the system before the throttle body and mixes with the air drawn from the intake. The water/methanol then changes state from liquid to gas by using the excess heat to evaporate the liquid and thus cooling intake temperatures – like when you sweat to cool down. Colder temperatures mean you can pack more air into the cylinder, and therefore you can add more fuel, as well as advancing the timing and increasing the compression ratio for more power. But with numbers of nice examples in rapid decline over recent years, a tidy XR2i today is a genuine rarity. And the increasing prices and demand reflect this. KEY POINTS ENGINE Smoking and rattling are common – worry about blue smoke under load, knocking from the bottom end or the white plumes of head gasket failure. TRANSMISSION Floppy gearchange is normal but beware of groaning, growling and crunching – meaning a rebuild is needed. INTERIOR It’ll make or break an XR2i. Ensure the trim is correct, the seats aren’t sagging and the carpets aren’t wet. EXTERIOR XR2is rot a lot.
