Pistols are the best choice for personal defense (outside of a combat zone) because they are worn, not borne. This means, you always have them not just with you but on you. However, there are circumstances where you simply are not able to have a pistol on your body. While 99% of the time I wear a full-size pistol on my hip and dress around it, at least once a year, I have to costume myself like an adult—this means a button-down shirt and necktie over slacks. There has never been a better time to go shopping for suppressors. Oh, not the wait-time, but the price and performance time. Case in point: Daniel Defense Soundguard. The Soundguard trio are composed of a pair of stainless steel silencers, one in 5.56 and one in .30, and a .30 made out of titanium. I had the opportunity to test the stainless .30 and it was a pleasant time. You may remember the Daniel Defense Wave, an earlier .30 silencer. When I reviewed the Emissary two years ago (where has the time gone?), I remarked on how their 9mm government model was almost like cheating. I mean, accurate, soft-recoiling, snug in the hands, and ultra-reliable, it was almost like getting an upgrade to business class on an airline flight. Well, Springfield Armory has one-upped that with the Black Emissary line of pistols, and it was time again to have fun at the range. I readily admit to liking a number of odd-metric cartridges. This extends to hunting cartridges and when it comes to medium bores, one of my favorites happens to be the hard-hitting, yet surprisingly accurate 9.3x62mm Mauser. The 9.3x62mm is a classic old sporting cartridge introduced by German gunsmith Otto Bock at the dawn of the 20th Century in 1905. The cartridge was designed for general purpose use, being suitable for hunting the larger species in not only Europe and North America but also Africa. In 1905, Germany was an empire with colonies in Africa and China. While the 8x57mm Mauser was a fine military cartridge, it had proven to be a bit light in Africa. Bock recognized this. “History repeats itself ” is one of those traditional sayings that everyone accepts as accurate, because they keep getting validated over and over again. “History repeats itself ” is as true as “A stitch in time saves nine,” “A penny saved is a penny earned,” and “Never marry a stripper.” I was reminded of this as Smith & Wesson debuted their new metal-framed M&P pistols. Back when I was a young man, metal-framed semi-autos were the rule—there was the 1911, and then the various double-column DA/SA 9mms which all sported aluminum frames. Recently, while testing a B&T APC9K PRO 9mm pistol, I had the chance to examine and try an interesting, enclosed emitter red dot sight from Aimpoint, their ACRO P-2. The Advanced Compact Reflex Optic (ACRO) is a compact red dot sight designed to be either slide mounted on a handgun, or mounted onto a submachine gun, PDW, shotgun, or carbine. The ACRO can also be used as a back-up optic on magnified scopes and thermal imagers. The newer P-2 model offers improvements, most noticeably in battery life, over the original design. The light was fading fast. I was walking back from checking my 100-yard target when I noticed just how dark it was getting. I had a bit of time left, but not a lot. So, I grabbed a box of Black Hills’ 77-grain OTMs and began stuffing rounds into a magazine. Then, I moved from my bench to shooting standing supported. My target was a solitary steel silhouette posted 280 yards away. My plan was to put five rounds on target, check my point of impact, and then move to 450 and 500 yards. Back in the early days of pins and 3-gun competition, we had few shotgun choices, and they all had drawbacks. The main autoloader in use back then was the Remington 1100, and it was known to be, shall we say, fragile. Oh, they worked, but they were kind of like jet aircraft.
