In 1602, the Vereenigde Oostindische Compangnie (Dutch East India Company or VOC) was created to control the lucrative trade from the Indies. They established trading posts on South Africa, Borneo, Sumatra, Java, Timor, Celebes, Bali, Malacca, India, Ceylon, the Persian Gulf, Japan and Taiwan.
