NOW in its sixth year, the Fishing for the Future Program continues to grow, with this year’s one day Cops and Koori Kids Fishing Workshop held in late January hailed as the most successful yet. Children from the Jerrinja Aboriginal Community had the chance to wet a line during the school holidays at the special Department of Primary Industries (DPI) fishing workshop at Orient Point run in partnership with the Shoalhaven Local Area Command. ANTI-SOCIAL behavior by some fishers on Sydney’s ferry wharves is seriously jeopardising future access for all fishers to these popular fishing spots. While most anglers fishing the wharves do so responsibly, a small minority continue to do the wrong thing. There has been a recent upsurge in public complaints about excessive noise late at night upsetting nearby residents as well as litter and anti-social behavior. In order to ensure continued angling access to these facilities it is vital all fishers do the right thing now, as failure to do so will likely result in continued loss of access.…

SKIRTED trolling lures have a long history. A lot of the earlier models were designed and refined in Hawaii, but long before then many coastal people had learned that dragging combinations of feathers, fibres and fish skins behind canoes and simple sailing boats attracted the attention of many oceanic fish. Lure fishing for marlin began in the 1940s and 1950s with simple straight running designs in what was predominately a dead bait fishery at the time. In the 1960s the Hawaiians took the game up a notch, with new designs such as the famous plungers that changed the blue marlin fishery in that area forever and spread worldwide. THE CSIRO issued a plea during the summer holidays for people to stop discarding rubbish in places where it can end up in waterways. It noted that 8.4 million tonnes of rubbish end up in the world’s oceans each year. In Australia, there are about six items of plastic on our coastline for every person, with the worst hotspots being between Brisbane and Melbourne, the western coast of Tasmania and the southern part of Western Australia. Seabirds and sea turtles are significantly affected by eating discarded plastic, and while 40 per cent of litter found during clean-up activities is made up of beverage containers, discarded fishing equipment is also common. THE obvious first effect of Deputy Prime Minister Barnaby Joyce’s decision to suspend the importation of green prawns after an outbreak of white spot disease in Queensland is an increase in the cost of prawns for both human consumption and bait. For some years, non-fishos have been bemused by messages on packets of green prawns stating “For human consumption only: do not use as bait.” That’s because the white spot virus, harmless to humans, is not killed by freezing and can infect both fish farms and waterways if it gets released accidentally through the use of infected green prawns as bait. Cooked prawns aren’t banned as cooking kills the virus. About $50 million worth of green prawns are imported annually and predictably Aussie seafood importers are upset by the ban,…

THE urbanisation of South East Queensland is proceeding at high speed. The rapid increase in population is predicted to continue, driving the need for housing and services. If you believe some observers, by the end of this century the coastal strip from Tweed to Noosa will be a string of densely-populated cities. This growth will consume much of the remaining farming and natural land and potentially adjacent wetlands. It’s conceivable that the islands that form the maze that is the southern bay and Broadwater areas, which includes Jumpinpin, will be targeted. THE Mohawk is the latest edition to the already extensive Australian made Lively Lures range. I’ve been using the Mohawk for a few months now, mostly for wild river and impoundment bass in NSW. For being only 60mm long, the Mohawk is quite a chunky lure and has a fairly big profile when it’s swimming. The deep diving bib and tough construction of the Mohawk has proved to be very effective on my trips upstream fishing deep, river stone and boulder lined pools. With a quick few winds it will be well under a meter of water, diving quite rapidly with a tight action and levelling out at about 3.5m. THE "just-left-the-showroom" condition of my boat has seen me cop a bit of flack from mates. “You spend more time polishing it than you do fishing from it!” was one of the most common comments… until they saw the boat completely washed down with Salt-Away – in about 30 mins – after a long day offshore. As the product’s name suggests, Salt-Away is a maintenance product that quickly and easily removes salt from various surfaces.
