These days, change in our sport moves faster thanks to the rapid acceleration of information online. THE CSIRO has produced Australia’s first entirely home grown carbon fibre, which it expects will allow local industries to mass-produce next generation materials for use in everything from satellites and fighter planes to sporting equipment. It believes its break-through will lead to a generation of carbon fibre that is stronger and of higher quality than current imported material. It was produced using polyacrylonitrile fibre, spun on the CSIRO / Deakin University wet spinning line, then carbonised at Deakin’s “Carbon Nexus” facility. This CSIRO patented technology is hoped to turn the Geelong region, where Australia’s first carbon fibre was created, into an internatioanl carbon fibre hub. FISHING has come a long long way since the days when cavemen caught fish with their bare hands. Over time we’ve progressed from using our hands, to using hand lines made from all sorts of primitive materials, to nylon and braid in the 21st century. Fishing and the equipment we use has evolved significantly since those early days with the emphasis being on rods and reels. Solid fibreglass replaced bamboo, then hollow fibreglass replaced solid glass. After that, with a few exceptions, carbon fibre replaced the lot. CITIZEN science (CS) is a term that first appeared in the late ‘70s and it refers to members of the general public engaging in scientific work, in collaboration a scientist. Perhaps the most well-known CS program in Australia is the "Aussie backyard bird count". But it’s not just bird watchers that can be involved, there’s all sorts of CS programs underway, and luckily for us, there are opportunities for recreational anglers as well. THE perfect hook is thin in gauge, extremely strong, sharp as a needle and corrosion proof. And while we have seen a lot of improvement when it comes to hook technology, in game fishing the perfect hook just doesn’t exist yet.
