PHOTOS have emerged of a whale shark being winched off the deck of the Geelong Star supertrawler, according to a report on the Tasmanian Times website. The Stop the Trawler Alliance said an informant, who claims to be a crew member of the Geelong Star, sent the photos. The whale shark has been the centre of a Freedom of Information battle after AFMA or the Geelong Star’s representatives, or both, were accused of covering up the factory ship’s interaction with the shark in February this year. AFMA is refusing to release the full video of the interaction with the whale shark.…

A CONSERVATION group has bought out a commercial shark fishing licence on the Great Barrier Reef according to a report in The Guardian. The World Wildlife Fund (WWF) has reportedly paid $100k and plan to retire the shark licence which allows the holder to drag a 1.2km net anywhere along the length of the reef targeting sharks. The licence can also be used for fishing with lines to target other fish species. The move is in response to recent Queensland government figures showing that shark captures on the reef almost doubled from 2014 (222t) to 2015 (402t). The WWF is now seeking funds to help cover the cost of the purchase.…

QUEENSLAND’S Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries, Leanne Donaldson, has moved to prohibit the use of spikes on trawl sleds to reduce the risks of overfishing and damage to the marine environment. Spikes on trawl sleds are mainly used in the eastern king prawn fishery and their effects on the seabed have upset both conservation groups and other non-spike using trawl fishers. Spikes are a recent development and it’s believed up to 12 commercial fishing vessels are now using them. New regulations will result in operators using spikes to be issued an infringement notice and be fined $1,178 per offence.…

1 SWORDFISH AND TAG & RELEASE TASMANIA has gained a reputation as something of a swordfish hot-spot, with record numbers of fish (over 30) caught along its part of the continental shelf this year. Five swordfish caught by recreational fishermen have been tagged with retrievable satellite trackers to attempt to find out more about swordfish behaviour and stock structure, including where they feed and where they breed and whether fish remain in one area for most of their lives or move up and down the east Australian current. The trackers detach after 250 days and float to the surface where they can be recovered and be checked.…

When they are in an ambush position, their lateral line sits in the mud and is extremely sensitive to feeling movement on the bottom. AT this time of year, particularly in South East Queensland, flathead are a major target species for many anglers. These quite prolific fish receive a lot of fishing pressure, but seem to be remarkably resilient and thrive in most coastal estuaries. They are very interesting animals, one of the ultimate ambush exponents and a very aggressive predator. WHEN the East Coast Current (or in the words of Nemo, “The ECC”) brings warm water down along the eastern seaboard, anglers on the North Coast of NSW start to get excited. They know the annual mackerel run is not far away. Heavy gear is dusted off, reels tuned and live bait jigs and single strand wire fill tackle boxes in preparation for the season ahead. THIS year’s Dave Irvine Memorial Snapper Classic (DIMSC) will include a Family Fishing Day on Saturday 13th August. The Family Fishing Day has been developed to get more anglers involved in catch & release angling, including those that are either new to fishing or simply don’t have access to a boat. The family day has also been established to encourage families to become involved and to help educate the younger generation on safe handling practices, to help ensure their catch swims away in the best possible condition. Both Dave and the DIMSC committee believed it is imperative to educate younger anglers in catch-and-release angling as they are the future of the recreational angling community. SUPERTRAWLER operator Seafish Tasmania has failed to pay the record fine imposed on it after being convicted of environmental offences earlier this year according to a report in the Hobart Mercury. The Tasmanian-based company, that operates the Geelong Star, pleaded guilty to dumping more than 1200 truckloads of fish processing waste water from its Triabunna plant on a private property in 2012. Seafish also admitted to dumping waste water in an unnamed creek on Tasmania’s East Coast three years ago. All Tasmanians, including companies, that don’t pay fines are listed on the Tasmanian Department of Justice’s website under the List of Enforcement Debtors. The investigation into the company’s activities by Tasmania’s Environmental Protection Authority cost taxpayers $100,000.…

AN operation to crack down on illegal fishing offences in south western NSW has found 61 recreational fishers not complying with regulations for Murray crayfish. Operation Victor was executed over two weekends in June in the areas of the Murray and Murrumbidgee Rivers open to Murray crayfish fishing, with Fisheries officers inspecting 292 fishers and finding 61 of them to be non-compliant with the regulations. As a result of the operation 31 penalty notices and 49 caution notices were issued, with penalties ranging from $100 to $1000 for those fishers who didn’t comply with regulations over prohibited size of crayfish, exceeding the daily bag and possession limits or unlawful use of nets and traps. Officers seized a total of 55 Murray Crays and 34 nets and traps during the operation.…
